Old Man Nick Knack (/ゆうじい Yuujii) is a character in the Dragon Quest series that appears in the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo DS Versions of Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride.

Appearance and personality[edit]

Old Man Nick Knack is a wizened man with white hair and bushy eyebrows and mustache. He wears a loose purple coat overlaid on top of a striped yellow robe with a purple sash tied around his midsection. Blue wrappings are binded around his ankles with leather boots covering his feet. A blue scarf is around his neck and he is usually seen holding an ornate staff decorated with a globe that is somewhat accurate to the world map.

Story[edit]

Old Man Nick Knack died of old age waiting for certain goods to arrive at the Knick-knackatory, but became a ghost and continued to wait. After the Hero delivers the special products, he becomes the curator of the museum. He calls himself "Ghost Grandfather", because he has forgotten his real name. While this character's name is similar to that of Yuji Horii, the game creator has stated in a pre-release interview that the two are unrelated.

After 18 pedestals are filled, Old Man Nick Knack gives the Hero 1,000 gold coins as thanks.

Diary[edit]

Old Man Nick Knack's diary can be read from a bookshelf in his bedroom and changes depending on how the Knick-knackatory is managed:

Entry 1[edit]

"Today is the... Well, today's the day after yesterday. Just like every other day.

But anyway, this fella brought me a Maxi medal, so he did! 'Twas the least I could do to appoint him as curator.

I wonder whether he'll make a go of the museum or not. Maybe he'll make it into the grand knick-knackatory I always dreamt of.'"

—(Old Man Nick Knack) (DS)

Entry 2[edit]

(Written after the basement has all Knick-knacks.)

"Today is the... Well, today's today, that's what it is!

So anyway, the fella hasn't put a single article on display! He's put the whole lot in the box room...

I'm startin' to wonder if he doesn't have sometin' against me..."

—(Old Man Nick Knack) (DS)

Entry 3[edit]

(Written after 6 or more Knick-knacks are placed on the first floor.)

"Today's some day or other, I can't rightly remember when.

But it doesn't matter. The point is, the place is finally startin' to look like a knick-knackatory. 'Tis slow progress, but it's gettin' there.

Ye can't be too quick-quack with the knick-knacks, though. Slow and steady, that's the key. That way I can keep an eye on the fella."

—(Old Man Nick Knack) (DS)

Entry 4[edit]

(Written after all pedestals in the basement and the first floor have Knick-knacks, plus one pedestal on the second floor having one.)

"Ah, me ole diary. How's she cuttin'? D'ye happen to know what the day is, do ye?

Well anyway, he's found me a fair few knick-knacks now, so he has.

It won't be long 'til every pedestal in the place is taken. I can hardly contain meself!"

—(Old Man Nick Knack) (DS)

Entry 5[edit]

(Written after 7 Knick-knacks are placed on the second floor.)

"There's no time to write down the date!

Give a dog a bone, I was right to appoint that young feen as curator!

He's made everytin' just grand. 'Tis almost like I was runnin' the place meself, so it is! Here's hopin' it lasts a long while."

—(Old Man Nick Knack) (DS)

Entry 6[edit]

(Shown occasionally when reading after Entry 5)

"Me heart's too taken to care about the date!

Sue brought me some cakes today, so she did.

What a fine wan she is! She's a kind heart and a figure that'd have yet playin' seven knick-knacks all the way up to heaven!"

—(Old Man Nick Knack) (DS)

Entry 7[edit]

(Written after the Yggdrasil sapling is watered.)

"I couldn't care less what day it is.

The knick-knackatory's about as perfect as it can be.

I can honestly say I've not been so deeply moved since the day I died."

—(Old Man Nick Knack) (DS)

Entry 8[edit]

(Shown occasionally when reading after Entry 7.)

"Aaah... Will I every remember what day it is, will I?

Anyway, I had a little chinwag with Sue after the museum closed today.

She's a grand talker, than wan. And fair as a spring daisy too."

—(Old Man Nick Knack) (DS)

Entry 9[edit]

(Written after the Catas Trophy is placed on the top floor.)

"Today's... Well, knick-knack, Janey Mac, 'tis one o' those days!

The lad's put the Catas Trophy on display! I nearly died again, so I did! Again!

He's a tough one, that fella. I can't rightly grumble at him, what with him bein' such a bruiser an' all."
