Ruff Rider

Ruff Rider is a recurring skill in the Dragon Quest series. Though its effects vary between games, it is an attack associated with wolves and is one of the signature abilities of Ruff.

AppearancesEdit

Dragon Quest XEdit

Ruff Rider can be learned by Rangers by investing 150 skill points into their Ruggedness skill. It costs 6 MP to use and summons a spectral white wolf to attack an enemy four times, ignoring their Defence. It is an enhanced version of Wolf Whistle.

Dragon Quest Heroes IIEdit

Ruff Rider is one of Ruff's special attacks, costing 7 MP to use. When used, Ruff will jump on top of his wolf companion and unleash a series of attacks.

Dragon Quest TactEdit

Ruff Rider can be learned by Ruff at level 80 and costs 57 MP to use. It inflicts 360% potency Woosh-type physical damage to a single enemy. Since it is a Coup de Grâce, it takes two turns to charge and can only be used twice per battle. Upgrading the ability increases its damage and reduces the amount of MP it costs to use.

EtymologyEdit

  • Ruff Rider's Japanese name, Fenrir Attack, is a reference to Fenrir, also known as Fenrisúlfr, a giant wolf from Norse mythology. He was bound with chains due to his horrific strength, but it is prophesied that he will be unleashed during Ragnarök, the end of the world. Once free, he will devour the sun and defeat the chief god Odin in battle, swallowing him whole afterwards.
