Selflessness is a recurring ability in the Dragon Quest series.

It protects allies by having the user take the hit in their place, covering one friend in the mainline games and the entire party in the Monsters spin-offs.

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation[edit]

Selflessness shields any ally for the duration of one round. It is granted at the first rank of the Paladin vocation.

It is used by the enemies Liddle, Brock, Cabot, iron tortoises, and plated goretoises.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past[edit]

Selflessness works in the exact same way as in the previous game, being learned by Paladins at the first rank.

  • In the Nintendo 3DS version, it is now an advanced skill and can also be learned by Champions at the first rank.

It is used by the enemy ironclad wartoises.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies[edit]

This ability is learned with 55 skill points allocated into Virtue skill. The user guards any ally in critical condition for one round.

Dragon Quest Monsters[edit]

Known as Cover in this game, it requires the monster to reach level 5 with 35 HP, 30 Defense and 30 Agility. It grows into Guardian when the monster reaches level 12 with 84 HP, 72 defense and 72 agility. It is naturally learned by the Grendal, IronTurt, LavaMan and StoneMan.
