Selflessness

Selflessness is a recurring ability in the Dragon Quest series. When used, it will protect a single ally for a one turn, taking all attacks targeting them in their place.

Appearances

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation

Selflessness shields any ally for the duration of one round. It is granted at the first rank of the Paladin vocation.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past

Selflessness works in the exact same way as in the previous game, being learned by Paladins at the first rank.

  • In the Nintendo 3DS version, it is now an advanced skill and can also be learned by Champions at the first rank.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies

This ability is learned with 55 skill points allocated into Virtue skill. The user guards any ally in critical condition for one round.

Dragon Quest Monsters

Known as Cover in this game, it requires the monster to reach level 5 with 35 HP, 30 defense and 30 agility. It grows into Guardian when the monster reaches level 12 with 84 HP, 72 defense and 72 agility. It is naturally learned by the Grendal, IronTurt, LavaMan and StoneMan.

Dragon Quest Monsters 2

The requirements to learn Cover are unchanged. It is naturally learned by the BossTroll.

Selflessness can be learned from:

Dragon Quest Tact

Selflessness is known naturally by Diamond slime at level 1 and can be learned by Armoured scorpion and Masqueraider at level 22, Leery lantern at level 26, Wyrtle at level 36, Stone golem at level 38, and Thwarthog at level 42. It costs 23 MP to use and will take all attacks for any allies in the squares adjacent to the user until their next turn. Although it is not stated, Selflessness will also give the user a 40% reduction in damage taken for one turn, as well.
