Effect Curses the wearer (effects vary)

The skull helm is a recurring piece of headwear in the Dragon Quest series. Although this monstrous skullcap imparts a deadly curse on its wearer, it can be purified with the use of Alchemy.

Appearances

Dragon Quest VIII

The skull helm has a defence bonus of +49, but it is cursed and reduces the wearer's attack to 0. It can only be worn by Yangus, as well as Morrie in the 3DS version. There are only two in the entire game: one in a treasure chest on Isolated Plateau which is accessible with the Godbird's soulstone and one in the Heavenly Dais. Although it can be sold for 4,500 gold, it is not recommended due to its scarcity and the fact that it can be purified into a Sun crown using alchemy.

Although it is not ideal to equip the Skull helm doing normal gameplay, it can be useful for farming; if Yangus has the skill Steal Sickle (or Stainless Steal Sickle) and equips the Skull helm, the player can use the skill on a desired enemy repeatedly until they obtain they item they want without the risk of killing the enemy.

Dragon Quest IX

The skull helm makes a reappearance in this game and can actually be cursed again with the use of Malicite in the Krak Pot if it has been purified with saint's ashes.
