Re: Concerning moving files

I'm afraid it's nothing that organized, because I'm still pretty dopey when it comes to using/navigating a wiki in that capacity. I simply started at the back of the file list and move forward, changing whatever it is I can along the way, at least in terms of monster images.

I do plan on getting back to this eventually, I'm just tied up at the moment working on a personal project. Sorry about that, yo. --PantheonSasuke 00:05, 15 June 2011 (CDT)

When I first started renaming them, I settled on trying to keep the names to one spot with spaces only existing between the game and system. I was completely unaware of any sort of wording that could be used for simultaneous changing in accordance with article names, and can't quite figure out how it might work even now. (although I think I do grasp it now, but if it'd go off the name of the page then wouldn't it also capitalize the first letter of the name? That'd be inconsistent with in-game capitalization for the most part, though my current method probably clashes with that as well since I capitalize the first letter of the name in the file for reasons I don't quite remember now. Plus, a lot of articles still call files by the names they used before the new file naming convention was thought up, so they'd all have to be changed in-article regardless) I can't get my thoughts straight right now in regards to this, to be honest, but I feel like I've gone a bit far right now to suddenly start over, and given how slowly I've been doing things it'd probably take even longer to get it all done. Sorry if that sounds like cranky rambling, but that's about as much as what comes to mind presently. --PantheonSasuke 21:03, 4 September 2011 (CDT)
Kinda agreeing with Ragnar, here, multiple images for at least the recent games isn't a big deal, what bothers me is when there are two images for the SAME title and they try to go for the same thing (usually one or the other being superior quality, if I spot and rename the worse version first I usually save the better one and upload it as a new version to the bad one to avoid any messes with deleting a page and then making a new one with the same name as the old). That thing with the dracky file was probably a fluke, since I wasn't considering the file that existed before the information import that included the backdrop used in the original :P Also agreein' with Ragnar in regards to simple solutions, and the sprites CAN be hard to tell apart. This can especially be the case with the sprites from DQM and DQM2, notably ones that hardly underwent change since the biggest difference between those games is that 'white' is more of a beige color in DQM, which can be difficult to tell from the small sprite. Best not to sweat these things, yo, and to be honest I'll probably be avoiding the wiki for a bit to not get spoiled too much to Joker 2. That and I'll hopefully spot some name changes to implement here (pretty sure I already know what drolls are called now... yeah, I've spoiled myself a bit, but I still want there to be some surprises, heh). --PantheonSasuke 18:28, 10 September 2011 (CDT)
I think I'd rather get a good idea of how much better Pro is, assuming it ever gets localized, by playing the original first. Besides, it isn't going to help the franchise outside of Japan if everybody skips out on the first version waiting for an enhanced one we might not even get. Heck, I don't think I'd be able to wait for Pro even if it was 100% guaranteed to be localized. It's better to try something yourself than go off of the opinions of others', anyway. In these instances, that is. --PantheonSasuke 20:56, 11 September 2011 (CDT)

Slow Load Times

Yeah, the site can be slow sometimes. We are still on a shared host (cheap). I've found that there are good days and bad days. It all depends on how busy the sites are that are sharing our server. Someday I'd like to upgrade, but that costs a lot more (almost 4x as much). --FlyingRagnar 07:49, 31 August 2011 (CDT)

Is there a reason why Autoconfirmed Users can delete pages?

Though I'm pretty sure this was for Pantheon Sasuke, who requested to delete images, but you can delete pages too. Can you just grant administer permission for me and Pantheon Sasuke and revert the user rights so that only administers and up can delete pages? A precaution to vandalism. --V7ing 21:14, 4 September 2011 (CDT)

Vzing, thanks for your concern about possible vandalism. However, I feel that right now things should be pretty safe. In order to become autoconfirmed, you must make 50 edits and be registered for 10 days. I think this makes it very unlikely that deletion vandalism would happen. In the future if this becomes more of a risk, I will change it to make it more safe. --FlyingRagnar 23:49, 4 September 2011 (CDT)
Shoot, I meant to post this in the main page's talk page. Whatever. Well I didn't know that you had to make fifty edits to be one. Sorry then. :D --V7ing 08:10, 5 September 2011 (CDT)
You did post it there; I moved it. I didn't think it would be good to put the info about autoconfirmed users on a really popular page. --FlyingRagnar 11:01, 5 September 2011 (CDT)

Spam and &

Vzing, you seem to have a knack for finding bugs.  ;) Basically, the URL rewriting which makes the URLs simple looking cannot handle '&'. That is why the category fails to load/delete/etc. There are solutions and I am looking into them. I will let you know when I get it fixed. Thanks for finding it!

Also, I'm working on the recent spam problem. I already had editing disabled until the user confirms their email, so I'm not sure much will help. I added a captcha when creating a new account, but I can't seem to get it working yet for creating pages, etc. --FlyingRagnar 23:42, 8 September 2011 (CDT)

Update, I noticed that most spammers are uploading files. I've tried to crack down on that in the preferences, so we'll see if it helps. The site has been unbearably slow for me lately. Ugh. --FlyingRagnar 23:51, 8 September 2011 (CDT)
I've fixed the problem with special characters in titles. You should be able to use & in titles with no issues now. I've deleted the category that you did not want. --FlyingRagnar 13:24, 9 September 2011 (CDT)

Re:Categories concerning Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2 Pro

I think having a category for the Pro monsters is a good idea. Monsters that are in both can be in both categories. That makes it easy to figure out which ones are in which version. --FlyingRagnar 21:12, 9 September 2011 (CDT)

Either name is fine, but I probably would go with 'Pro' since it is a rather long category name. --FlyingRagnar 21:21, 9 September 2011 (CDT)

Re: MultipleUpload on Special Pages

Done. I've changed things so that multiple upload is the only upload page. Let me know if you have a case where you would like to upload more than 10 at at time. I can adjust it, but I think 10 is a good baseline. --FlyingRagnar 09:45, 12 September 2011 (CDT)

Moving Categories

Hey, I'm moving those categories using the bot. I wonder if some of them are a bit incorrect? For example, isn't it more correct to put (NES) on the ones which are the original version. It looks like you were leaving those without the console version, but then adding it for the remakes (SNES) (PSX) etc. --FlyingRagnar 20:05, 14 September 2011 (CDT)

Nevermind, I see now that you were putting the remake categories as subcategories to the original game. I think that layout is fine. If we need to change it someday we can. --FlyingRagnar 20:08, 14 September 2011 (CDT)
All requested files should be moved to their new categories. Let me know if you find anything else that needs moved. --FlyingRagnar 23:25, 14 September 2011 (CDT)

Re:Should...

Vzing, I don't think we should be too picky about image name schemes. The most important thing is that the name gives all the details related to the image, i.e. the game and the version. File:Grandmasternimzo DQV PS2.png or File:Nimzo DQV PS2.png both seem fine to me. Those names are detailed enough that you know what the image is without having to look at it.

Re: moving files without a redirect. Done. You should now have a check box when moving a page which gives you the option to create a redirect or not. --FlyingRagnar 17:19, 15 September 2011 (CDT)

One other thing I thought I might mention. I tend to be a fan of using the name of the enemy used in the specific version of the game. For example, I think the file name would be "Healer DQII NES" and not "Healslime". --FlyingRagnar 10:48, 16 September 2011 (CDT)

Spam

I'm kind of at a loss about what to do about our spam problem. I've changed it so that new accounts must fill out a captcha AND confirm their email address before editing/uploading files. The spammer accounts do all of that, which seems to indicate that they are not robots. Hmm... --FlyingRagnar 14:22, 16 September 2011 (CDT)

Strange

I think you are a little strange, but I see no reason why we wouldn't be on good speaking terms.  ;) Good luck with your studies. Hope you come back again soon. --FlyingRagnar 22:54, 20 September 2011 (CDT)

Editing privileges have been fixed. The spammers should be neutralized. --FlyingRagnar 20:57, 25 September 2011 (CDT)

Re:I need you to...

There was only a handful of files to move, so I did manually. --FlyingRagnar 09:22, 28 September 2011 (CDT)

Deleting Userpages

Vzing,

I saw you deleted an old redirect I had in my user pages. Just wanted to mention that you shouldn't delete pages in other user's areas in the future. It's generally considering invading others' privacy. I don't care that you deleted that particular page (it was junk anyway), but I just wanted to give you a heads up. --FlyingRagnar 19:43, 29 September 2011 (CDT)

Galleries

I see that you are not a fan of galleries...care to share why? They tend to get quite cluttered, but we need a way to associate images with content pages. The gallery tag has a lot of parameters; maybe we could shrink them down to a smaller size? gallery documentation link --FlyingRagnar 00:53, 1 October 2011 (CDT)

That sounds fine to me. I would warn against deleting pretty large galleries. In my experience it is much harder to track down all the images that have been uploaded for a particular monster later on. The search functions are not the greatest on Mediawiki. --FlyingRagnar 21:18, 1 October 2011 (CDT)

Re: Can you confirm something

It would appear that at least the sprite for a slime is different between PSX and DS.

PSX Slime: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScmVHgOwoAI&t=0m8s DS Slime: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wxh3cvDSQj0&t=8m57s

We might just to have to ask around on the Dragon's Den to know what the real difference is. I always thought the sprites on the PSX page would taken directly from the game, but it might not be the case. --FlyingRagnar 13:57, 8 October 2011 (CDT)

.jpg to .png

I don't think there is anything that we can do to convert them. Even if there was such a tool, the conversion would likely be non-optimal, meaning then we would have a bunch of not so good looking images to clean up. I would just use the multiple upload to add the new PNGs. Then we can go back and delete all the JPGs later. Sound good? --FlyingRagnar 19:44, 28 October 2011 (CDT)

It's really the best option.  :-) --FlyingRagnar 19:57, 28 October 2011 (CDT)

Re: SEIWA

I agree we have a lot of stubs, but last I checked we had about 1000 stubs of our 2600 or so articles. That's only 38%, and SEIWA requires less than 40%. However, I think the Dragon Quest series in general is somewhat of an exception. I mean, this is a HUGE game series compared to Kingdom Hearts or Chrono Trigger. Aside from Final Fantasy, it is the largest SE series period. I think that probably gives us a little more leeway because more games = more articles = more stubs. --FlyingRagnar 15:37, 2 November 2011 (CDT)

Re: Crab Confirmation

Vzing, I have not had a chance to check this yet. I'm not sure I will be able to figure it out, but if not I will post it on the Dragon's Den and see if anyone knows the answer. --FlyingRagnar 13:45, 9 November 2011 (CST)

Great job. Glad I could be of help.  ;-) I wonder if Pantheon would have known. --FlyingRagnar 17:02, 9 November 2011 (CST)

Re: Mobile Skin

Sorry you don't like it. You must not have been logged in? If you are logged in, the skin should be whatever you have chosen as your preference. --FlyingRagnar 09:18, 30 November 2011 (CST)

Re: Sprite Renaming Project

Suppressing redirect creation when moving files was something that occurred to me, but I think then it felt safer to make the redirects so the images would still work on the pages until the pages themselves could get the updated names. As for the item sprites, I had no real intention of doing those since my main objective at the beginning was just getting the monster sprites done since there are many, many in-game images of monsters. As for an algorithm for the item sprite file names, if I'm interpreting it correctly, it could probably be something similar to what's in use for monsters (Name_Game_Console/Version). This might require some group consulting, though, so maybe run it and other ideas by the other users that frequent here. Form a consensus and such.

I'm just going to say now that I probably won't be back to active participation here any time soon. I'll spare the details and just say that I haven't felt motivated at all lately to do anything remotely productive. Sorry. --PantheonSasuke 17:34, 1 December 2011 (CST)

Vzing, don't feel pressured that you have to do everything yourself. Editing this wiki is supposed to be for fun, so don't feel rushed to finish this project. Edit when you feel like and working on whatever you want. I'm sure Pantheon will be back around when he is able to. I know we don't have a lot of editors, but that's ok. We are not in a competition with anyone. --FlyingRagnar 18:52, 1 December 2011 (CST)
Yo? Sorry for the delay, but I've been having trouble connecting to the wiki lately. --PantheonSasuke 12:47, 22 December 2011 (CST)

Re:Fortune Street

I have no purchased Fortune Street either. I might end up getting it for Christmas. I'm not sure it's worth $50, but I'm it seems like it is decent. --FlyingRagnar 09:25, 13 December 2011 (CST)

File Names

Vzing,

If you would like to start using a different file name formatting, that is fine. Here are my thoughts. I don't think using 'S' to designate a sprite is necessary. Specifying the game name and version should be enough. Any artwork for a specific game/version will likely have a more descriptive name "DQIII NES Slime art" for example. I also don't think that all of the media file name have to follow a specific pattern at all. Of course, it makes sense for them to be similar, but as long as the important pieces are there (game name, version, monster name, etc) then we should be able to search on those keywords to find the media. Basically, as long as the name is distinctive enough to identify the file, you can use whatever pattern you think works the best. --FlyingRagnar 21:59, 17 December 2011 (CST)

Square Wikia

Regarding the Square wiki, I am only a sysop there. Bluer is an administrator, so I feel that he should make the final decision. I contacted him on his FF talk page two days ago. Being that it is the holidays, we need to give him more time. Icysugarspike 09:34, 26 December 2011 (CST)

You've got a green light from me, regarding the transfer of data. I much prefer this style of wiki to the old one. On a different note, I got my hands on this book a while back and I'd like to upload some images from it. When can I expect an e-mail confirmation, so I can begin editing? Icysugarspike 10:22, 26 December 2011 (CST)

Still no email confirmation. Is it possible for me to be sent another one? Icysugarspike 13:18, 26 December 2011 (CST)

Thanks. This time, I got something. Icysugarspike 13:41, 26 December 2011 (CST)

New Role

Vzing, you have been given the new 'manager' role. There should be no change in what you are able to do. If you find you cannot delete, move, etc. please let me know so that I can fix it. --FlyingRagnar 08:55, 28 December 2011 (CST)

Help?!

Any idea how to change this page so that the image I just uploaded isn't stuck behind the box (?) I don't want to make it worse! Much appreciated if you could help. Icysugarspike 10:09, 28 December 2011 (CST)

Thank you, looks good! Icysugarspike 10:21, 28 December 2011 (CST)

Site images

Sorry, I was just following the category tree of Chrono Wiki. But, who says they're right, right? ;) Sir ISS 16:26, 28 December 2011 (CST)

May I ask why you are not a big fan (to probably put it mildly) of image galleries? Sir ISS 08:50, 29 December 2011 (CST)

When you say "the Project", if you're talking about how so much of the wiki has barren, blank pages with the scantest of information, I think I know what you mean. Let me be honest with you. My greatest contributions to any wiki is usually in the art department, as I'm a huge art collector. However, I am also first and foremost, a game fan. If I was not, all the art would be meaningless. Having said that, I am fully able to spot things amiss (incorrect enemy data, etc.) from my 20-plus years of gaming, and will correct things as I come across them. Between all of us here (my image contributions should be viewed as no less important), we should be able to make a strong information base for Dragon Quest. Looking forward to working with you! Sir ISS 09:24, 29 December 2011 (CST)

Okay, I need you to be clear with me. Am I wasting my time or something? Sir ISS 11:26, 29 December 2011 (CST)

Sooo...you're pleased with what I've done? (Hell, yeah?) 11:31, 29 December 2011 (CST)

Sorry, there's bound to be some mistakes, but like you said, they're all fixable. Sir ISS 11:54, 29 December 2011 (CST)

Re: Gasbagon

I would say that Gasbagon is correct. Since there are no other appearances, it was likely shortened to Gasgon due to GBC text requirements. --FlyingRagnar 12:24, 29 December 2011 (CST)

Deletion

Do me a favor. Delete this page for me. Thanks. Sir ISS 12:59, 29 December 2011 (CST)

I titled it wrong. Sir ISS 13:01, 29 December 2011 (CST)

Re: Moosifer

Yes, they are the same. Here is the progression.
eigerhorn (DQ4NES) - goat horn (DQM) - goatHorn (DQM2) - ankhorn (DQVII) - moosifer (DQM:J, DQIVDS, DQVDS, DQIXDS, DQM:J2)
I may have left off DQVIDS, is it moosifer there as well? --FlyingRagnar 09:08, 30 December 2011 (CST)

Image deletion

(Repeat to myself: Every image is sacred!) Aside from the black background, I though they were identical. Sorry. Sir ISS 15:28, 30 December 2011 (CST)

Okay, I can't for the life of me figure out the difference between a Skeleton and a Skeleton Soldier. I'm trying to finish up with the DQ I enemies, and now I'm stuck. Sir ISS 15:34, 30 December 2011 (CST)

You don't know, either, eh? Sir ISS 15:54, 30 December 2011 (CST)

I meant visually. I'm in the image department, remember? I'm trying to sort out by color schemes what image I've got, and I can't tell who's stronger, as you said, by looking at a picture. Sir ISS 10:05, 31 December 2011 (CST)

Never mind. I'll figure out the images myself. Sir ISS 11:56, 31 December 2011 (CST)

SEIWA

Bluer apparently is not interested in joining the Alliance, as you can see on my Square Wikia talk page.

Re: Image Format

Yeah for the fan translation ones just name them after the name in the translation. --FlyingRagnar 13:13, 28 January 2012 (CST)

Ok, you want me to delete? The bot is not sophisticated enough to find and delete the redirects. It could possibly delete any article which links to a given article, but that is not what we want since it would delete stuff we don't want to delete. --FlyingRagnar 13:48, 29 January 2012 (CST)

Re: Various Questions

First of all, you need to start being more polite in your messages on talk pages. Demanding answers from anyone is rude and not the way to get others to respond to you. Say 'please' and 'thanks'. Don't be so blunt with what you want. Don't tell anyone else what they should or shouldn't do. You have no authority to do that.

When will you delete those images?

Answer: When I feel like it. There is nothing stopping you from manually deleting them or from editing in one of the other millions of places. I am aware of your request and will delete them at some point.

Why did you let those bots in our site?

Answer: I did not "let" them in. Spammers are not uncommon on mediawiki wikis. It is impossible to keep out every instance of a spammer. In this case, all 4 users were using legit gmail email addresses which had been confirmed. There is no way to distinguish between these and other valid users. Therefore, we will just have to delete the spam and block them. Second, it is not "our" site. It is my and Zenithian's site. We pay the bills and do the administration.

Why is Dragon Quest Wiki talking a LONG LONG LONG LONG time to load again? (especially the mobile version)

Answer: We are on cheap shared webhosting. This costs about $70 a year. As a result sometimes other sites we are sharing a server with hog the bandwidth and make our site slow. We can do nothing to control when this happens. I'm sure it will eventually get better again, but unless we upgrade to better hosting someday, it will continue to happen.

--FlyingRagnar 16:04, 1 February 2012 (CST)

In this next few days I am going to try to install another captcha extension which will require new users to answer a question of some sort. Hopefully that will keep out more of the spam. --FlyingRagnar 08:18, 2 February 2012 (CST)

Homepage Videos

Any ideas for a new video for the homepage? --FlyingRagnar 13:52, 13 March 2012 (CDT)

RE: Hi

Not in particular. There is plenty of various things to do. You could just read existing articles and make sure they make sense, edit them for correctness. It is not hard to find minor things that need correcting.

Wasn't there something I was supposed to do for you a while back? Delete all the images in some category? I know I did that once, but I think there was another category you wanted cleaned out. --FlyingRagnar 08:50, 16 July 2012 (CDT)
