Wight prince

From Dragon Quest Wiki

The Wight prince is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series, first appearing in Dragon Quest V.

It is a former sovereign that still clings to life in undeath.

Characteristics[edit]

Wight princes are zombified royals whose bodies have wasted away to show skulls with sunken glowing eyes, some of their teeth having fallen out. They wear ragged white robes with a magenta cloak around their necks that drags along the ground. The magnificent golden crowns on their heads are decorated with red and blue jewels and are worn with green caps. The princes hold themselves up with sceptres that are topped with blue orbs and they wear a ring with a red jewel on their bony hands. They are able to sear their opponents with flames called forth with their sceptres, which they can occasionally relinquish. After a 25 year long absence from the series, the wight prince made a reappearance in XI along with their kingly superiors. The princes continue to brandish their staves, as well as gaining the ability to cast darkness magic and revive their fellow monsters from the hereafter. They can also call forth skeletal allies to aid them in battle.

Etymology[edit]

In its original usage in Middle English, a wight refers to a living creature, especially a human being. But in works of fiction, it has come to refer to a supernatural being, often wraith-like or undead. Wights are featured in J.R.R. Tolkien's world of Middle-earth, being depicted as undead monsters that are animated through violence and hatred such as the barrow-wights of The Lord of the Rings. This reinvention of the term lead to its inclusion in the roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons in 1974, leading to the current popularity in RPGs.
