Erdrick's Hollow

Erdrick's Hollow is a cave northwest of Tantegel surrounded by desert. It is typically the first cave visited in Dragon Quest and contains Erdrick's Tablet. It is the only location in Dragon Quest, barring towns, that is completely devoid of monsters—the reason for this is left up to players to speculate on. This is changed in Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, where random encounters appear in Erdrick's Hollow.

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest[edit]

The cave is a very simple pseudo-dungeon meant to teach the player how to explore underground chambers with dwindling torch light without the added pressure of monsters. The cave is entirely optional and only contains Erdrick's Tablet in the original version and a monolith bearing Erdrick's mark in all other versions; both of these serve the purpose of instructing the player on how to cross the sea to reach the Dragonlord's Castle.

Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake[edit]

Unlike in the original game, Erdrick's Hollow now contains random encounters. Additionally, several other adventurers appear in the dungeon, attempting to explore the area before turning away at the tablet.

Erdrick's Hollow, like other cut locations in the original Dragon Quest II, reappears in the game's HD-2D remake. Here, the dungeon is mostly overgrown, with most chests having been looted and Erdrick's Tablet being mostly illegible. Notably, random encounters here are significantly weaker than most encountered at the point in the game the dungeon can be entered, reflecting the early-game nature of the dungeon in the first title.

Trivia[edit]

  • Erdrick's Hollow is preceded by the Talontear Tunnel in Dragon Quest III. It seems logical that the cavern was later renamed to Erdrick's Hollow after the hero left their legend behind, edged in stone.
