The Sage of Rain is the one who dwells in the Shrine of Rain to guard the eponymous staff from ne'er do wells, ensuring it would only come into the hands of the worthy.

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest[edit]

The Sage of Rain before the chest holding the staff of rain and demands that the Hero provide evidence of his claim of being of the bloodline of Erdrick, only handing over the staff when shown the lyre of ire to prove his courage. Interestingly, in the NES version he will vanish when spoken to and the lyre will disappear from the Hero's inventory, only for him to reappear when the Hero exists and reenters the shrine. This was altered in Dragon Quest I & II so that he simply steps aside for the player to open the chest.

Dragon Quest I HD-2D Remake[edit]

The Sage has been given his own distinct sprites in the HD version, and more personality as well. The Sage initially refuses the Hero until he is told the wanderer is on orders from King Lorik to speak with him, but he nevertheless states that it is the duty of his long line of sages to test those who would bear the mark of the hero and that the staff will not be his until he returns with the lyre of ire.

Much later, near the finale of the game, the Shrine of Rain is under siege by the Dragonlord's forces with the Sage nowhere to be found. It is not until the Hero reaches the summit of the shrine that he sees the old man being confronted by the leader of the assault, the Goregoyle, who demands the Sage hand over the staff of rain. The old man taunts death in face as he tells the Goregoyle off, giving the Hero the time needed to intercept a fatal blow. Once the villain is slain the Sage thanks the Hero for his timely rescue, and is astonished to see he has faeries in tow. On the faeries' insistence the group enters the inner-most sanctum of the shrine and the Sage witnesses the two fair folk use the faerie flute and lyre of ire to summon Rubiss back into Alefgard. Besides himself in awe, he declares the staff of rain belongs to the Hero and accompanies him to his living quarters on the shrine's first floor, where he reveals the chest housing the staff was right in under everyone's noses the whole time thanks to the invisibility granted by rubbing fading jenny oil on it.
