Dragon Quest I HD-2D Remake[edit]

The Warlock of Doorlocks has been given a proper name and a personality in the HD version, being an eccentric old man with a bad habit of being carried away in the middle of impassioned speeches and one of the few humans to forge a friendship with a dwarf. The Hero enters the Warlock's home by using the thief's key, getting the old man's attention. He boasts that even such a handy tool would pale in comparison to the magical key he is crafting, but laments that his research has hit a wall and all of his experiments have just yielded keys that disintegrate after a single use. The Hero interjects and asks the old man to help him create a cure for the life-threatening illness that has befallen the Captain of the Tentegel knights, having heard that the Warlock is just as capable with cure-alls as he is with latches. The old man insists he is too busy with his research and too irritated with the sudden disappearance of his dwarf assistant to help, but the Hero strikes a deal to make the journey to the Cave of the Dwarves in the Warlock's stead if he promises to tend to the Captain's ailment.

After making the journey to the cave and learning that the dwarven craftsman is suffering an intense illness due to the fetid swamps that had sprung up in the wake of the Dragonlord's appearance, the Hero is sent to the Faerie Village in the hopes of finding a yet another cure. After reuniting with the Arm-Twister and Day-Dreamer, the Hero fetches the necessary ingredients and is able the cure the dwarf with the sunup syrup the faeries brewed for him. After administering the reagent to the dwarf, the little craftsman returns to Rimuldar and gets right back to work with the Warlock. The pair create the magic key in short order, and the Warlock hands it over to the Hero as thanks for saving his friend's life. The old man remarks how uncanny it is that such a man would enlist the aid of not just the dwarves but faeries as well, and reflects that it is akin to the story of Erdrick. Tales of the legendary hero's own magical key, long since lost to time, was what inspired the duo's research in the first place and they feel their replication is the Hero's by right.

The Warlock and the dwarf then state they plan to fund their next research project by selling the single-use keys on the side, and ask the Hero to remain quiet bout there being a more durable model.
