The Mantleplace is an optional dungeon in Dragon Quest V.
The Mantleplace is a dungeon in Dragon Quest V. It houses a legendary cape.

Detail
The Mantleplace houses a legendary cape, the Pallium regale. This cape is one of the strongest, if not the strongest, equipment options for the Hero 5 in the entire game, providing 90 Defence and reducing all elemental damage by either 35 (SFC) or 30 (remakes) points. To enter the dungeon, players must have the Ultimate Key. The dungeon itself can be located to the north of Whealbrook and west of Coburg.

To acquire the Pallium regale, one must seal away tiles on the floor by covering them with blocks, which, when done to all the tiles on a particular floor, will seal away the MFamiliess in that room. How many tiles one needs to seal away varies on the version of the game one plays - in the Super Famicom original, simply sealing away the final four tiles on the last floor will suffice, in the remakes however one must seal away all tiles on all four floors.

But it will not be an easy task... the monsters in this dungeon are some of the most treacherous adversaries in the game. It is recommended if you attempt to tackle this dungeon that you come prepared with a variety of recovery items for negative status effects, HP and MP, as even if you can deal with the MFamiliess, you might start running out of MP before the tiles can be covered in time.

Due to the dungeon's difficulty, players have the choice of whether they want to get the Pallium regale early, which will be an enormous help for the rest of the game, or holding off for later when their Party 5 is stronger (coming, however, at the expense of getting to use the Pallium regale as much). Simply foregoing the dungeon entirely is also an option as it is not required to beat the game.
