They became a piece of footwear when shoes and boots became a separate equipment slot. In most games in the series, they grant 1 exp for each step the wearer takes on fields with enemy monsters present, but in [[Dragon Quest IX]], this was changed to a 5% exp bonus at the end of each battle.
