The player first encounters Monty during a cutscene in the [[Shrine of Promise]], where interjects after the party encounters a friendly [[slime]]. He instructs players to keep an eye out for [[List of recruitable monsters in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake|friendly monsters]] and send them his way, keeping them in his stable and encouraging the player to enter them into the various [[Monster Arena (Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake)|monster arenas]] found across the world for big prizes.

Monty is also the final opponent in the [[Damdara]] monster arena, with his team consisting of a [[flying flayer]], [[minidemon]], and [[soaring scourger]]. How the old man is aware of the secret underworld, much less how to freely move between the two worlds, is left to the player's imagination.
