Localization history
The name Monster Wrangler is the current English translation of the Japanese Mamono Tsukai, replacing the older Monster Master nomenclature that was first used in 2011 for the Nintendo DS remake of Dragon Quest VI. The Monster Wrangler name was first alluded to in 2019 through the wrangler's ring item in DQB2 that allowed players to recruit monsters as residents for their villages, and was fully established during the June 22, 2023 trailer reveal for DQM3. The appearance of the Hero 5 of the fifth mainline game in DQTact with the title of "Legendary Monster Wrangler" followed that same year, and the term was cemented in 2024 with the release of DQ3HD.

The design of this vocation, specifically for the male variant, has been censored. The male Monster Wranglers now wear black shirts instead of being bare chested.
The vocation has the inglorious distinction of being the one male design that was censored to satisfy the strictness of the CERO ratings board, with the men now wearing black shirts instead of going bare chested.
