The Quagmire Cave  is an undersea tunnel which connects the north and south sections of eastern Alefgard.

The dungeon has one entrance on each island, as well as both sides being surrounded by poisonous swamps.  It is one of only a few places which is accessible in every game in the Erdrick trilogy.

The Swamp Cave connects the main part of Alefgard to the islands of the southeast which includes the town of Rimuldar. Princess Gwaelin can be found in this cave but is protected by a Green Dragon.

DQ
Quagmire Cave must be crossed in order to reach the southeastern continent.  The cave also contains the kidnapped Princess Gwaelin who is guarded by a single Green dragon until The Hero 1 saves her.

DQ2
Quagmire Cave serves no real purpose in the game due to the fact that by the time The Hero 2's Party 2 can access it, they already have a ship which eliminates the need to enter the cave.

Additionally, the cave has been downsized to a simple straight corridor with no treasure inside.

The cave is first mentioned on the bridge to Kol by a dying Tantegel guardsman, who tells the Hero 1 that he was of the regiment dispatched to search for Princess Gwaelin and witnessed a group of monsters dragging her into the swamp. The Hero passes this info along to the Captain of the royal guard and his daughter as they arrive on the scene, with the two continuing into Quagmire Cave as the Hero attends business in the Shrine of Rain to the north.

Shortly after entering the cave later on, the Captain will confirm the Princess' imprisonment before succumbing to his illness made worse by the fetid air of the cave. His daughter escorts him through the cave to Rimuldar, where he is rendered bedridden and curing him becomes a lengthy segment of the game's story. The layout of the game itself remains unchanged from Dragon Quest I & II for the Super Famicom, aside from the addition of a basement level that requires the magic key created by the Warlock of Doorlocks in Rimuldar to enter; this basement loops back up to the first floor near where the green dragon's lair was in past versions, preventing players from being able to sequence-break.

The entrance to the chamber where the princess is held is shrouded by a purple mist, and upon entering the Hero sees a distorted replica of the Princess' bedroom in Castle Tantegel. The Princess curtsies and greets her rescuer, but then begins to fervently press him for information regarding how he came to know she was imprisoned in the cave. Before he can answer, the disembodied voice of the real Princess Gwaelin prays to Rubiss to dispel the facade. The prim and lavish furnishings set up for Princess Gwaelin's benefit are revealed to be mere illusions created by a vaporous monster known as the Mirage. The merciless fog has been torturing the Princess with visions of her father and late mother burning to death in order to break her spirit and reveal what she knows of Almighty Rubiss. Her phantasmagoria is so great that she assumes the Hero is part of the illusion as well and the gargantuan green dragon tasked to guard the princess lunges at the Hero. Once the serpent is slain, the Princess realizes her Hero is the real deal and falls head over heels for him on the spot as he carries her out of the cave.

Later on, the player will need the moonbeam dew from the cave in order for the Craft-Master to create the moon sigil in the Faerie Village.

Quagmire Cave is totally optional, but it does contain some excellent treasures for the portion of the game it is first accessible. In addition, the swamp cavern is part of the Firstborn Protector of Cantlin sidequest.

The mighty armlet and the metal slime helm require the magic key to access, and the cypress stick and dragon claws need the ultimate key. In addition there is also an ability scroll that teaches the Dragon Slash skill.

Quagmire Cave is not fully completed during the time period of the game.  Inside the north entrance, The Hero 3's and Party 3 can visit several workers who are busy completing its excavation.

The tunnel is now home to a scant few treasures and there is a disguised crone ranger creeping on the workers, but the dungeon's features remains the same otherwise.

The real point of interest it that the lost henchmen of Robbin' 'Ood have taken up work in the tunnel after falling into the underworld. One of them will tip the player off to the whereabouts of the fabled zenithium metal, which can upgrade Ortega's Helm into the Auroral Helm; if the player follows the goon's clues, the metal will be found in the depths of Gaia's Navel and require a wrecking ball to dislodged.

DQTact
The Master and Majellan pay a visit to the cave in Chapter 2, Episode 5 of the game's limited Dragon Quest event quests hoping to find the lost Mindini there. Despite having had her kidnapped, the Green dragon tries to drive her away when it becomes annoyed with her. A battle ensues with the dragon and it joins the party afterwards, having grown tired of its position as a guard.

Trivia
*The dialogue the fake Princess Gwaelin says in the HD version is what she says in past iterations of the game, prior to pressing the Hero for info
