Dragon Quest V is a classic turn based RPG like the games before it with even more new elements of gameplay.  There is now a backround to the battle screen like in the original Dragon Quest.  Although not prominent in the beginning of the game monster recruiting is a valuable addition to the game.  Monsters not only join you but level up and learn new abilities as well.  Also new is the fact that certain weapons can attack multiple enemies.  Weapons like whips could attack groups of enemies while boomerangs could attack all monsters on screen.  Unlike Dragon Quest IV the battle AI is optional throughout the entire game allowing players to once again fully control all their parties actions.

Dragon Quest V, was the fifth game in the Dragon Quest series of role-playing games published by Enix, and released for the SNES. Never released in North America due to the North American headquarters closing down. The game was remade for Sony Playstation in 2004 (for Japan only) and will be coming to the Nintendo DS in 2009 for North America (stated by Square Enix).

Prologue

The game begins with a man named Papas, your father, who is pacing back and forth in his castle when Sancho comes down the stairs and informs him that his wife has just given birth. Papas then goes upstairs to see his newborn baby and then wants to decide a name for him. After some deliberation the name you entered at the beginning is decided upon and Papas's wife begins to cough. Papas asks what is wrong but it then cuts to a black screen and then goes to you the main character, now a child, who is on a boat with your father Papas.
