Starting from Dragon Quest IV, when 8 stronger-variety slimes (usually called Slimifications) are together, they can merge together to form a King Slime. In Dragon Quest IX, a lesser variation is performed that forms a slime stack.
Thus far though, the technique has not been demonstrated to be used by metal slimes.
