Only a few classes are available at the start, but mastering certain combinations of classes will unlock more powerful classes. Two secret classes are only available by the use of special magic books, and any character other than the [[Hero (Dragon Quest VI)|Hero]] can only change to the "Hero" class by mastering all other nonsecret classes in the game.
