Naming Conventions / Manual of Style

Taking from Siyavash's entry to Wikipedia, somewhat modified:

// To keep a consistent style to the articles, these guidelines should be followed.

The article name, when first mentioned, should be bold. In addition, game names and song titles should be italicized.

In general, abbreviations or other shorthand should be avoided: when referring to Dragon Quest V, spell out the full title of the game, don't abbreviate it as DQV or DQ5. The same goes for role-playing game. Even though most editors will likely understand what you mean, the casual user may not be familiar enough with gaming terminology to make sense of what many of us take for granted.

Naming conventions should follow the official English language localizations of the series, where available. If the names among the various localizations is not consistant, the following shall apply:

  • Game article names should be that of the original Japanese. The localized name, if different, should be disclosed in the opening paragraph.
  • Articles on characters should be titled using the name that appeared in the first localized version; alternate names should be disclosed in the first paragraph.
  • Articles on spells, items, and other objects and places should be named after the localized name as it first appeared; alternate names should be disclosed within the article, where appropriate. For example, a spell name difference would be discussed later in an article, as it relates to a later game, while an item article, such as herb, would include the alternate names within the first paragraph, preferably the first sentence.

If there are any questions about what to call a specific thing, you should post a note on the article's talk page for discussion.

Games in the Dragon Quest series are numbered using Roman numerals, not Arabic numerals. In other words, you should refer to Dragon Quest IX, not Dragon Quest 9. //
