Split

As per Dragon's Den, the Ratscal and the Fat Rat are actually different enemies. In Dragon Quest II, there are three different Rat enemies – Ratscal, Fat Rat, and Dirty Rat (names via the international iOS/Android release). In Dragon Quest V, there are only two different Rat enemies – Fat Rat and Dirty Rat (names via both the international Nintendo DS and iOS/Android releases).

This article confuses the similarly colored Ratscal with the Fat Rat. The Fat Rat has more blueish fur, the Ratscal has more greyish fur. The confusion likely rises from the SNES/PS2 releases of Dragon Quest V, where the Fat Rat was given the Ratscal's colors. These colors were corrected in the more recent DS and iOS/Android releases of DQV. The confusion also may be influenced by the fact that the Ratscal is an early enemy in DQII while the Fat Rat fulfills the same weak role in DQV (while the Fat Rat is a bit more powerful and seen a bit later on in DQII).
