Lampling

The Lampling is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series, first introduced in Dragon Quest XI, though it would retroactively debut in Dragon Quest X from the start of Version 5 onwards. It is a flaming lantern that has become animated after being abandoned by humans.

CharacteristicsEdit

Lamplings are black handheld oil lanterns that have come to life due to being abandoned by their owners. It has an ovoid "head" with a singular black eye and a small smiling mouth, a tendril on its head where its handle would have been, and an enclosure where it holds a flame, which it uses to cast fire magic. The lampling moves around by levitating in midair and swings back and forth, sometimes even wasting their turn in battle to do so. They are nocturnal monsters that attack unsuspecting travelers at night by disguising themselves as ordinary lanterns.

AppearancesEdit

Dragon Quest XEdit

Lamplings retroactively make an appearance starting in Version 5.0, though this time they are quite strong (Knowing Pyre o' Fire and Kafrizz, as well as being able to scatter fiery powder) since they are encountered in the Netherworld as opposed to the early-game enemies they would later be in XI.
