A funghoul is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series.

Introduced in Dragon Quest III, it is a dim-witted mushroom monster utterly dedicated to putting adventurers to sleep with peculiar spores.

Characteristics[edit]

A funghoul is a spotted, red-capped mushroom with stalks thick enough to serve as a face and body. It has stubby arms, small feet, sad, yellow eyes, and a fanged mouth with a tongue lolling out. In some spinoff games, it is considered part of the undead family as the Obake (おばけ) in its Japanese name refers to a type of yōkai or ghost in folklore.

Notably in this game, Funghouls have the ability to inflict poison on the party instead of putting them to sleep. This is the only game where they do so.

Trivia[edit]

  • A funghoul's name is a combination of the words "fungi" and "ghoul", a type of demon from pre-Islamic Arabian mythology that is said to feast on corpses. Its name may also be a pun on the often mispronounced Italian curse word "fongool", or "vaffanculo".
