Elaine is a laid-back mermaid in Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake who is best friends with Melinda, and becomes an unexpected ally of the Scions of Erdrick over the course of their adventure.
Appearance and Personality[edit]
Elaine is a ginger mermaid of slim physique who styles her hair in a flared bob cut. She wears a blue bra with a teal sash around her waist, a golden torc on her left arm, and has a coral ornament in her hair.
Elaine is a bubbly and cheery woman who has been besties with Melinda for a very long time, growing close enough to frequently refer to her as "Mel Mel" and "Mellykins". Elaine enjoys teasing Melinda over her crush on the sailor Sylvester, but after learning that the man she's sweet on has a wife and child she worries for her friend. She is the (comparatively) more cautious of the two, not wanting to speak with the Scions of Erdrick after the children finish off the monsters that were hunting them out of misplaced mistrust of humans.

Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake[edit]
Elaine and Melinda are first encountered on Gaggle Rock, a favorite locale among mermaids, where they were being chased down by a school of madder mermen until the Scions arrived and filleted the bottom feeders. The duo then introduce themselves, explaining that the mermen had set their sights on the pair because they rescued the shipwrecked Zahan fishermen they had been hunting―the madder mermen lurked at Gaggle Rock and waited for Elaine and Melinda to return after they'd escorted the fishermen back to their island. This took place at approximately the same time as when the Scions departed from Zahan themselves, having met wives of the fishermen and Sylvester's wife in particular. When the Princess of Moonbrooke asks if there is a way to repay the mermaids for their good deed, her patience being taxed by Melinda not getting to the point and Elaine interrupting her with her teasing, Melinda insists there is no need for the quartet to worry as Sylvester stated he would return with gifts shortly. As it goes, the Prince of Cannock opens his mouth without thinking and mentions that Sylvester has a family that would also like to express their gratitude, which sinks Melinda's spirits. Elaine tries to console her friend and Melinda asks the children to tell Sylvester that there's no need for him to return with any presents, hiding her feelings by insisting that humans and mermaids are too different to have any sort of treasure in common.
When the Scions return to Zahan to inform Sylvester of Melinda's wishes, the sailor insists she be rewarded and asks the group to deliver the pearl earring from the Shipwright's Shrine to Melinda on his behalf. Back at Gaggle Rock Elaine and Melinda are sunning themselves when the children arrive and the earring is delivered. The Princess of Moonbrooke praises Melinda for putting her feelings for Sylvester aside even if it pains her, which causes the mermaid to burst into tears. This causes a chain reaction where Melinda, the Princess of Moonbrooke, the Princess of Cannock, and Elaine all sob loudly while the boys look on cluelessly.
The next encounter with Elaine is a much more serious one; after preventing a raid on the Faerie Palace by the forces of the demon Belial, the group learns that the mermaid kingdom of Mersea is simultaneously being attacked by the monster Mariella. As Mersea lay in the depths the heroes will need the mermaid's blessing to safely travel under the waves―with no other option they return to Gaggle Rock. Here they see Elaine crying by herself, who explains that she swam away as fast as she could when the attack began but Melinda and the others are still trapped behind. The children are eager to help and ask Elaine to bless them so they can use Lorelei's harp to safely send their ship underwater; Elaine's bad habit resurfaces and she teases the kids by saying it is custom for mermaids to only bless those they are fond of and pretends to mull the idea over before ordering the Prince of Midenhall to come to her. She kisses the backs of his hand and does so for each Scion in order for the trick to take affect and leads them to Mersea.
When Elaine and the Scions arrive they find the kingdom to be totally empty, save for Melinda. She explains that when the monsters attacked the Queen of the Mermaids gave the order to flee to the Mermaid's Sanctuary further east, but she noticed Elaine was missing and lingered behind to search for her while staying out of sight―it turns out that Elaine had panicked so hard she bolted for Gaggle Rock instead of the rendezvous point. Happy to be reunited with Melinda and touched she'd risk her life for her, Elaine remains in Mersea for the rest of the game.
During the credits roll of the true ending, Elaine can be seen at Gaggle Rock meeting with the King of Midenhall along with Melinda and the Queen, making official contact between human and mermaid civilization.
