The pearl earrings are a pair of baubles that were originally set into the notches on Lorelei's harp and allowed the instrument to form a durable enough bubble for ships to sail to the very bottom of the sea. They were removed from the harp to weaken it as an additional security measure to prevent the Children of Hargon from reaching the Shrine of Rubiss and harming the Goddess as She slumbered. The pearls were kept safe by the mermaids for many years, until one day a young siren took them and fastened them into the earrings they are today. She gave one to a human man she had become smitten with and kept the other for herself, only to give it away at the first opportunity when a terrible misunderstanding broke her heart. This came to pass when she rescued a Zahan man from drowning, putting it in his hand once she swam him back to his home, effectively losing both of the magic instrument's sources of power in a flurry of emotion.

In the modern era the people of Zahan would set the pearl earring given to the man in the Shipwright's Shrine along with a pair of sacred claws―this arrangement is symbolic of the superstitious islanders' desire to sever all ties to the mermaids after the man who was given the earring drowned while clutching it in an accident, leading his fellow islanders to believe he was "cursed" by the sea maidens. The Scions of Erdrick are told to fetch this earring and the claws by Sylvester, a high-ranking Zahan fisherman who was saved by a pair of mermaids named Elaine and Melinda , who believes the earring should be returned to the mermaids as a sign of his gratitude. Later, after repelling the monster Mariella when she attacks the Mermaid's Sanctuary with her division of the Children of Hargon, the Queen of the Mermaids will notice that Melinda has one of the pearl earrings and sets it into Lorelei's harp.

Much later, when all five sigils have been collected and the Scions of Erdrick are ready to enter the Shrine of Rubiss, they speak to the Queen and learn of the missing earring. This sends them sailing north of Galenholm to the Sunken Ship, where they retrieve the pearl earring from a chest along with a letter in a bottle. The letter is a hastily written message penned by none other than the man whom the lovestruck siren gave the pearl to so long ago, and the circumstances surrounding their doomed love is revealed. The Scions take the earring and the message to the Queen of the Mermaids to empower the harp, and the sovereign of sirens gains closure on her tragic youth.
