The Aged Priest is a character introduced in Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake. He is the chief priest of Beran's church, but there is more to this minister than meets the eye.

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake[edit]

The Aged Priest can be found at Beran's church, with a younger priest and a nun serving under him.

Upon speaking to the Prince of Cannock at the dock, the town is attacked by the Brute bat, a monster in service to the Children of Hargon. The Aged Priest is found facing off with the creature in the northwest of town, and the Scions of Erdrick rush to assist. The heroes handily defeat the Brute bat, but when the Prince of Cannock stops to boast, the dying beast exhales a foul haze with his dying breath, laying a curse upon the Prince.

The Aged Priest tries his best to remedy the Prince of Cannock's affliction, but with no success. The Prince of Midenhall and Princess of Moonbrooke depart for Cannock, leaving their companion in the Aged Priest's care at Beran's inn. The Priest is later seen pacing about in the church, conflicted about whether he should have revealed a certain secret to the young heroes.

In Cannock, the Prince and Princess consult with their fallen comrade's parents while his younger sister listens in. It is determined that the only possible cure for the Prince of Cannock's curse is a leaf of the World Tree, but the whereabouts of Yggdrasil was a secret safeguarded by the royal family of Rendarak, who were thought to have been exterminated when Hargon and his minions destroyed their country. The party return to Beran, this time joined by the Princess of Cannock. As they discuss Yggdrasil, the Aged Priest ushers them into the inn, where he discloses the location of Yggdrasil's Arbour. Though his own health is failing, the Priest is far more concerned for the cursed Prince of Cannock than for himself, and he dismisses the notion that he could use an Yggdrasil leaf on himself. He gives the party Forest's favour to help them reach the World Tree.

When the party returns from Yggdrasil's Arbour and the Prince of Cannock's curse is finally lifted, the Aged Priest confesses that he had secretly hoped the Scions of Erdrick might give in to temptation and sell the Yggdrasil leaf or otherwise fail in their quest. Though he does not elaborate on the details, he says that he once failed in a similar way himself. He gives the party the priest's missive, an introduction to the King of Dirkandor, and then speaks privately with the Princess of Moonbrooke. The player is not shown their discussion, but the Priest gives the Princess the surplus Yggdrasil leaf to use later.

When the party first meets with the King of Dirkandor, he calls the Aged Priest an "old friend", but does not elaborate. Much later, when seeking the way to Rendarak, the Scions meet with the King again and he reveals, after dueling with the party, that the Aged Priest is none other than the Prince of Rendarak, and has hidden his identity in the hope of one day revealing the hidden path to his former kingdom to the heroes who would defeat Hargon.

The Scions of Erdrick return to Beran to find the Priest bedridden and nearing death. With the King of Dirkandor's blessing, the party has earned his full confidence. He tells the full tale of his escape from Rendarak, during which the morale of his men was shattered and he only survived due to being knocked out by a panicking soldier, then passes the blessing of Rendarak on to the Prince of Midenhall. With this power, the party is able to open the sealed door within Beran's church, which hides a Teleportal to the Shrine South of Rendarak.

If the party visits him after the defeat of Hargon, the Priest peacefully passes away, grateful to have lived to see the dawn of a new age of peace.

Trivia[edit]

  • Unlike Mariella's relation to a certain bunny girl NPC in the original Dragon Quest II, the Aged Priest is an entirely new character to the HD-2D remake and does not represent the same individual as the priest encountered in Beran in older versions of the game.
  • His name will change from being displayed as Aged Priest to Prince of Rendarak in the conversation in which he bestows the blessing of Rendarak upon the Prince of Midenhall.
