Gwaelin's Gate is an undersea tunnel in Dragon Quest II. It connects the northern continent containing Cannock and Midenhall to the central continent containing Moonbrooke.

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line[edit]

The tunnel has 3 entrances, one from the south, one on an island, and one in the Shrine west of Cannock. Initially, the heroes are only able to enter the cave from the Shrine west of Cannock. Access to the cave is restricted until the Prince of Cannock has been added to the party.

The cave primarily serves as a connecting dungeon, similar to the Quagmire Cave. The island entrance exists as a decoy exit when the heroes are traveling south towards Moonahan from the northern continent.

Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake[edit]

Players will now need to obtain a Gwaelin's Gate pass from the Queen of Cannock after her son joins the party to be permitted entry through the tunnel. The northern entrance to Gwaelin's Gate has been redesigned into a tall, lavish building with an interior spacious enough to serve as a resting place for many travellers at once. The player's first impression of the place is botched due to it being attacked by a pair of monsters from the south, however. The Cannock guards were beaten to a pulp and the scuffle damaged the passage walls so that sea water has flooded the tunnel, preventing the Prince of Midenhall and prince of Cannock from reaching Moonbrooke.

While the guards lament their failure to maintain their post, the Prince of Cannock notes that they are not far from a northwestern lake cave where the fabled bottomless pot is said to be kept. The two bet on the old relic living up to its reputation and fetch it, serendipitously slaying the two monsters responsible for wrecking Gwaelin's Gate in the process while the Cannock guards report the events to the castle. Upon returning, the two princes toss the pot into the tunnel entrance and successfully drain the deluge. Upon exiting at the southern entrance, the princes will encounter the brother of the hermit living in the Shrine South of Midenhall.

Etymology[edit]

The cave is named after Princess Gwaelin of the first Dragon Quest. It is assumed that she and the Hero from Dragon Quest traveled through the tunnel on the way to founding the kingdoms of Cannock and Midenhall.
