The Forgotten Ruins are the remains of a village that was ravaged by the Dragonlord's forces, serving as a grim warning of what will befal the rest of Alefgard should the Hero fail to stop the tyrant's wicked ambitions.

The ruins lay to the northeast of Tantegel, past the northern bridge. It is an optional area, with the only point of interesting being the first meeting with the Troubadour wanderer Zalen. The musician explains that he's had writer's block ever since he distanced himself from his storied ancestor Galen, and is seeking inspiration by walking in the fabled bard's footsteps to regain his creative spark. As Galen chronicled Erdrick's journey, Zalen believes he will reach his potential as a musician if he walks the same path as the mythical hero and bids the player farewell, to be next encountered in the Nameless Ruins southwest of the Craggy Cave.
Should the player visit the ruined village during the ending, it is revealed that this was the home town of the Would-Be Heroes and its sacking was their motivation for trying to take up arms against the hordes of monsters. Having played a major role in saving Galenholm during the game's climax, the amateur warriors swear they'll find a way to rebuild their village. Whether this project is successful or not is left to the player's interpretation, as the ruins are not shown in Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake like many of the side-locations from the first game.
