Dragon Quest I HD-2D Remake[edit]
The Hero ventures into the Cave of the Dwarves after striking a deal with the Warlock of Doorlocks: the Hero will make the journey to the cave to retrieve the Dwarven Craftsman whom was assisting the old man until recently and the warlock will help concoct a cure for the ailing Captain of the Tantegel knights. The Captain has been brought to near-death by the curse-like illness festering in the fetid swamps that have sullied Alefgard in the wake of the Dragonlord's rising, and it so happens that the Dwarven Craftsman has been laid low by the same disease. The Craftsman has all but resigned himself to death but, when the hero urges him to not give into despair, he mentions the boss of the faeries said something about developing a cure for swamp sickness. Though he hasn't heard from her in a long time, this is enough of a lead for the Hero to act upon and he makes his way to the Faerie Village southeast of the Craggy Cave.
After going through the whirlwind of dealing with the faeries, the Hero returns to the Cave of the dwarves with the cure―sunup syrup―which instantly gets the Craftsman back on his feet the moment its administered to him. Thanking the hero for saving his life, the dwarf hurries off to Rimuldar to resume working with the Warlock of Doorlocks immediately. Once the Hero enters the old man's workshop, he is rewarded with the magic key. It is worth noting that restoring the Craftsman will change the Zoom point from the cave's entrance to the dwarf town proper.
Much later, after learning of the abduction of the Priest of Cantlin to the Weeping Isle by the wretched Spiketail, the Hero calls on the aid of the Dwarven Craftsman to repair the collapsed bridge to the isle. His fellow dwarves all volunteer to aid in the construction as well, happy to assist the human who saved one of their own. The bridge is repaired overnight and several dwarves linger in Cantlin, improving the relations between the two races. At this point the Hero has access to the shop within the Cave of the Dwarves as well. Speaking to dwarf NPCs in the cave will reveal that Nordy has become a legendary figure among their kind, and that some dwarves even swore fealty to dragonkind in ages past. One dwarf laments that not even their skills could cross the strait separating the Dragonlord's Castle from the rest of the archipelago, as the black isle is guarded by all manner of foul magic.
Players should remember to retrieve the wellspring crystal from the bottom of the well in the dwarf town, as it is necessary to create the water sigil.

Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake[edit]
The Cave of the Dwarves contains the entrance to the Cave of Confusion, one of the two bonus dungeons in the game. The Scions of Erdrick learned that the Cave of Confusion was created by the dwarves on request from the Goddess Rubiss Herself and that the Sphere of Light was safely hidden in its depths as they gathered the living memories and spoke to the Record-Keeper in the Faerie Palace. She informs the four that the dwarves have taken to hiding from the outside world much like her own fair folk in order to better protect the Cave of Confusion, and marks the location of their cave on the group's world map.
Upon reaching the dwarf town, one of them is startled that the four children can see him, and realizes that the prophecy his grandfather spoke of has arrived. The dwarf concludes that the four must be the descendants of the legendary Hero and are there to enter the Cave of Confusion, guiding them to the dungeon's entrance in the town well. Several dwarves warn the four children of the dangers of the Cave of Confusion, alerting the player to take the expedition seriously, while speak about incidental things. One cheeky dwarf tells the four that he likes to visit human settlements in secret, implying the folk have learned discarded their suspicion of humans since helping the lone Hero a century ago.
Note that the Zoom point for the Cave of the Dwarves is set to the entrance, and players wanting to skip the mine shaft dungeon should just Zoom to the Cave of Confusion.
