The Western Isle is a remote island found in the large lake on the western side of Alefgard. It is what remains of the West Tantegel Harbour, having been cut off from the sea by geologic shifts in the centuries since Dragon Quest III.

Dragon Quest I HD-2D Remake[edit]

The Hero is taken to the Western Isle by the Dream-Whisperer after completing the sidequest involving the wandering bard Zalen. This is takes place after speaking to the wanderer in the Forgotten Ruins, the Nameless Ruins, the ruins of Damdara after obtaining the magic key, in Cantlin after obtaining the ultimate key, in his home town of Galenholm after retrieving the lyre of ire from his storied ancestor's tomb, and finally by speaking with the Dream-Whisperer at the Shrine of Rain near the end of the game. She will then cast Zoom on herself and the Hero, adding it to the player's own Zoom list.

As the crux of the sidequest involves helping Zalen find places deeply connected to Erdrick so he can regain his musical spark, the Dream-Whisperer takes the player to the very place his ancestor first touched down upon Alefgard. She explains that after The Lord of the Underworld was slain, Erdrick returned to the isle and mournfully gazed up at the sky; the Dream-Whisperer states this is the sole time the Hero's mask of ever-reliable and stalwart confidence slipped, giving way to bitter tears and a silent prayer sent to a distant mother.

The only point of interest on the isle is a simple grave for Ortega, the father of Erdrick. Upon it sits Erdrick's helmet, which remains uncorroded over a thousand years later thanks to the untarnishable properties of zenithium metal. Upon picking it up, the Hero will notice an inscription on the inside and read it aloud:

"May victory smile upon you, Great Hero of Aliahan"
