Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line[edit]

When rumors of Hargon's rise to power and increasing activity began to spread through the world, the citizens of Burrowell realized that their settlement was dangerously close to the cultist's lair in the frozen hellscape of Rendarak and took matters into their own hands to protect themselves. Unable to evacuate the entire town, they buried the buildings.

Burrowell holds two vital keys necessary for completing the game: the jailor's key, which can be purchased in Burrowell at the item shop, and must be selected from the empty space in the item list. The other key is the floodgate key, which was stolen from the town of Slewse by a thief named Rogue Fastfinger. The crook will give the Luminaries the key after they interrupt his tunnel digging in the back of his cell.

Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake[edit]

Burrowell was founded by the scant few refuges who were able to flee Hargon's assault on Rendarak several decades prior to the events of the game. The survivors built their new home in a large cave in the shadow of Rendarak after monsters destroyed their first colony, and remain underground so as to not attract the notice of Hargon Elements of Rendarakian culture are seen throughout the subterranean village, such as the architecture being reminiscent of the Rendarak Shrine and the now-occupied castle even taking into account the difficulties of building around the cave's natural formations, and a man in the inn boasts that the weapons sold in the town are designs inspired by generations of Rendarak craftsmanship. The existence of Burrowell, much less that it is a Rendarak colony, is not known to the world at large; even the King of Cannock was under the impression that there were next to no survivors from that frozen land.

The town's security is maintained by a group of dutiful scouts who keep watch for any monsters snooping around. people live in fearful isolation, with one couple lamenting that their young daughter cannot play under the sun on the surface and a former merchant having to shutter his store over the difficulties of gaining new stock and fearing the same for his fellow vendors. Two guardsmen are posted at the distant Shrine of Flames, implying the town does have some access to the sea. It is assumed that this is how Luke, an amnesiac castaway fisherman from the southern island of Zahan, was discovered and brought to the underground church to recover.

This leads to a debate between the Town Guard Captain and the Town Guard Chief over whether it is best to kill monsters when one wanders too close to the town or to continue hiding from them in the hopes that the wondrous rock and be used to buy their silence. These arguments will resonate with the Princess of Moonbrooke and Prince of Cannock―the Princess knows all too well the cruelty of monsters and is certain the taking the fight to them even if it risks exposing the town when the rest of the horde comes looking for their missing number, and the Prince believes it is best to avoid bloodshed for as long as possible, knowing that the young and elderly would be at the risk Burrowell were invaded. In a rare moment of timidity, the debate causes the fire in the Princess of Cannock's belly to go out and she is unable to pick a side, seeing the wisdom and folly in both options. There is no right or wrong answer to this question and the Prince of Midenhall siding with one cousin over the other does not affect the game, only changing the dialogue for the scene.

Regardless of what the player decides, a fight breaks out on the surface shortly after when a sentry reports a duo of monsters lurking above ground. The Town Guard Captain rushes ahead and is wounded by the succubeast, who then orders her black teeny sanguini companion to join her in slaughtering the Scions of Erdrick when they arrive. The sanguini does not want to fight and is harshly scolded by the she-bat, who laughs in the face of the Prince of Cannock when he attempts to reason with her and gleefully states that the slaughter of humans is natural for monsters before attacking the four. After the succubeast is killed the Princess of Moonbrooke is left disgusted by the fiend's bloodlust while the black sanguini begs for his life; what follows is a emotionally charged scene where the Princess of Moonbrooke feels obliged to avenge her slain subjects by killing the monster while the Prince of Cannock talks her out of it, all while the sanguini watches on speechlessly.

The scene shifts to the town fountain where the Town Guard Captain admits he was wrong in seeking to fight the monsters, being ignorant of what bloodshed looks like and finding his knees weak when the critical moment came. The Town Guard Chief also admits he was wrong, seeing firsthand that it is impossible to reason with monsters and they would have taken the stone and the lives of everyone in Burrowell with it had he attempted to bargain with them. When the Prince of Cannock asks what the wondrous rock actually is in the first place, the Chief tells him that it is hidden on a far eastern island and insists they take it as it would be put to better use by the Scions. He gives them a letter granting them access to the stone, which is no less than the sun sigil. The Chieft thanks the young heroes for their help, gratefully stating that no more monsters have come looking for the slain succubeast and that the sanguini has willingly entered the town jail, sharing the spacious room with Roge Fastfinger of Slewse to the west. The Chief further explains that the little fuzzball is eagerly informing the town sentries of the movement patterns of the monsters in the area, determined to do all he can to keep the people safe. The Chief insists the group spend the night at the inn―free of charge―and the family reflects on the events of the day, with Prince of Cannock and Princess of Moonbrooke reconciling their disagreement. The group concludes that the only real solution is Hargon's death, and redouble their commitment to bringing peace to the world.

The Scions are now trusted fully by the people of Burrowell and are allowed to come and go as they please, provided they do so discreetly. They return after obtaining all five sigils to speak with the black sanguini in order to find any leads on how to pass the steep mountain range that surrounds Rendarak on all sides. The young heroes are pleasantly surprised to find that the sanguini has been accepted as part of the community, even being allowed to play with children, and has been christened "Elmoo" as thanks for his service with the door to his cell being left open so he can come and go at will. Elmoo's friendly disposition puts the Princess of Moonbrooke at ill ease, reminding him that she attempted to take his life not long ago, but he insists its water under the bridge. He explains that Burrowell is the first home he has ever had, albeit briefly, and that he cannot imagine the grief the Princess must feel for her kingdom to have been destroyed. With that behind them Elmoo agrees to seek out a way for his new friends to gain entry into Hargon's domain and asks that they listen in to what his roommate Roge is worrying about in return, which sets the group on a course for Slewse after speaking to the peculiar man.

During the game's finale the people of Burrowell are overjoyed to be free to walk the surface once more, with the elderly among them reflecting that the friends and family they lost so long ago must be celebrating where ever they are. The Town Guard Captain and Town Guard Chief remain somber, however, mourning the loss of Elmoo at the Shrine South of Rendarak. The Chief in particular is crushed by the loss of his friend readies himself to inform his fellow Renarakians that they freedom they enjoy was thanks to Elmoo's sacrifice. On the surface, the young couple rest in the sunlight while their little girl feels the wind on her face for the first time.
