The letter from the chief is letter of recommendation that allows players to obtain one of the five sigils from a tropical shrine.

The letter is given to the Scions of Erdrick by the Town Guard Chief of Burrowell after the Succubeast boss fight, which takes place shortly after the player arrives in the underground town. Showing it to the guardsmen posted at the Shrine of Flames allows the children to obtain the sun sigil, which enables their skills to land critical hits just like their normal attacks.
