Beran is a city in southwestern Torland in Dragon Quest II.
Appearances[edit]
Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line[edit]
Beran is floating city located on a large lake surrounded by mountains. Players can access the city by taking the center teleportal in the Fire Shrine, or by docking the boat on the southwestern side of the island. The city houses a Bank and a Tombola wheel.
In the remakes of II, staying at the inn in Beran causes the Prince of Cannock to fall ill. The only cure is for the remaining Luminaries to travel east of Burrowell and retrieve a Yggdrasil leaf from a forest on a small island south of the subterranean town. When administered to the prince, he makes a full recovery. The marks the only way the Prince of Midenhall and the Princess of Moonbrooke can travel together alone.
Beran holds the only teleportal that can be used to access Rendarak. It connects to the Shrine south of Rendarak which provides access to the Cave to Rendarak; assuming the Luminaries possess the False Idol and the Eye of Rubiss.

Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake[edit]
The layout of Beran has only been modestly adjusted in the transition to HD, with the developers instead focusing on making it the most lavish city in Greater Alefgard. The Prince of Cannock is quite impressed when the Scions of Erdrick enter Beran and insists on taking a diversion to sightsee, with the trio dispersing to explore. Once the player speaks with the Prince of Cannock on the southern docks, a woman will scream that a monster has entered the city.
The Brute Bat has been sent by Pazuzu to corrupt the people of Beran and tempt them into joining the Children of Hargon. It has cornered a Aged Priest near the great cathedral, but the Scions intercept the monster before it can do the old man harm. In it's death throes the monster curses the Prince of Cannock out of spite, with the lad losing all strength in his limbs. His cousins and the priest carry him to the inn to recuperate but his condition fails to improve overnight, and he insist his cousins leave him to continue the quest. The Princess of Moonbrooke is greatly anxious at the prospect of losing yet more family to Hargon, and the Aged Priest laments that no curative herb nor spell he knows has aided the teenager's plight. The priest appears to know of a possible cure but prevents himself from speaking further, and simply says prays the Prince will recover soon.
When the Prince asks his cousins to tell his parents that he was happy to be born their son, the Princess of Moonbrooke snaps at him and says she'd never be able to face his parents if they didn't do all they could to save him. Inspiration strikes and she insists on telling the King and Queen of Cannock of their son's plight, certain having the royal family looking for a cure will produce results. She asks the priest to watch over her cousin, then she and the Prince of Midenhall Zoom to Cannock.
After learning of the healing properties of the leaves of the World Tree Yggdrasil from the Queen and that its location was a secret kept by the royal family of Rendarak, the cousins return to Beran to find three Cannock guards have been dispatched by the King to protect Beran from monsters while the Prince is ill. The Princess of Cannock has also arrived, asking anyone and everyone where they know of the sacred tree. The little girl eavesdropped on the discussion with her parents and is determined to do everything she can to aid her brother. The Princess of Moonbrooke scolds her little cousin for slipping half a world away from the castle without telling her parents, but eases up when the Princess of Cannock states she cannot sit idly by while her brother suffers and loudly shouts how she could be a Scion of Erdrick and destined to help save the world if she can't even help her own sibling. The little lady's shouting gets the notice of the Aged Priest, who tells them all to speak with him inside where none can overhear.
At the inn, the Aged Priest makes the trio swear to utter secrecy before revealing the location of Yggdrasil's Arbour―an island south by southeast of the Burrowell peninsula. He explains that the tree sheds a single leaf once in a blue moon and that there may yet be a chance for the Prince of Cannock. He asks the group's forgiveness for keeping the information from them earlier, but the Princess of Moonbrooke says she understands the danger of such knowledge leaking to the masses. Armed with this knowledge the Princess of Cannock dashes off alone to retrieve a leaf to her cousin's frustration, but the priest warns the remaining two Scions of the nature of the forest surrounding Yggdrasil and how it tests those who would trespass. He gives them the forest's favour as the means to enter the verdant dungeon.
Upon retrieving the holy leaf and brewing it in a tea, the concoction is administered to the Prince of Cannock. He is freed from the curse instantly, and rejoins his family after a harsh chewing-out by the Princess of Moonbrooke and his little sister. The latter insists on joining the party now that her brother is cured, and the Princess of Moonbrooke vouches for her after seeing her prove herself in battle. The priest has witnessed the family commotion and alludes to a personal tragedy, chalking his earlier hesitancy to share his knowledge of Yggdrasil to a suspicious the children would not return from their quest. The priest dismisses their inquiries of his past and gives them a missive that will grant them an audience with the King of Dirkandor on the eponymous eastern island, and bids them good journey as they leave for Cannock.
Much later, after the Scions have proven their mettle to the King of Dirkandor twice over, the King sends them to Beran to speak with the last survivor of the royal family of Rendarak. It is none other than the Aged Priest, who fled from his motherland as a young man so many decades ago when Hargon razed it to the ground to make it his own. The priest regales his story to the Scions and explains that the one glimmer of hope that maintained him in spite of all the tragedy was that one day a Hero would emerge who would give the mad cultist his just desserts, and it is for that reason that the priest remained in Beran to guard the teleportal leading to the Passage to Rendarak. He admits that his faith waned and his bitterness grew as they years went on, until meeting the children rekindled that light―he blesses the four Scions to be able to pass through the seal he placed on the teleportal.
The player has the option to return to Beran during the game's ending. The Scions find him resting in bed, and weakly asks how they fare. Upon being told of their victory and the death of Hargon, the priest smiles and states Beran has been buzzing with news of monsters disappearing and knew there could only be one cause. The children beckon him to leave his room and witness the world of peace he long desired, with the Prince of Cannock lending him a shoulder. They gather at the bench just outside of the cathedral and watch the sun set over the floating city. The priest revels in its beauty, reminded of his youth in the castle, and passes with a smile on his face. The Scions of Erdrick erect a humble grave for the avenged prince, and depart for home.
