The Mermaid's Sanctuary is a bastion for seafolk found in Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake, used when the sirens are under attack. The sanctuary is ring-shaped like an atoll, albeit submerged, with the opening on the highest floor extending all the way to the bottom so the mermaids can swim to each floor directly. Beyond the aquatic maidens, the sanctuary is teeming with vibrant corals, starfish, and jellyfish taller than any human.

Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake[edit]
The Scions of Erdrick are informed that the sanctuary is under attack by Mariella and her division of the Children of Hargon by none other than Belial, her rank superior in the cult. The yellow demon snitches on his fellow pawn of Hargon once he is confronted and ceases his assault on the Faerie Palace, seeing the four young heroes as tools he can use to punish Mariella for her frequent disobedience.
The Scions sail under the waves to the sanctuary thanks to Lorelei's harp and are able to breath thanks to the mermaid's blessing imparted on them by the mermaid Elaine at Gaggle Rock. When the monsters attacked the mermaid kingdom of Mersea, the Queen of the Mermaids ordered the sirens to flee to the sanctuary for safety, but Elaine was so spooked that she fled to her favorite sunning spot in her panic. Upon arriving at the sanctuary the four children make short work of the sea monsters, defeating the octopests and yellowfinks that had cornered the fish women until making their way to the lowest layer of the sanctuary. There they see that Mariella has cornered the Queen of the Mermaids and a school of sirens, hellbent on killing the Queen simply because her beauty surpasses her own. Mariella's peons, the Toadalitarian and women o' war, plead with their mistress and reminds her that Belial's orders were to capture the Queen alive, but the jealous woman isn't hearing any of it. The Princess of Cannock and Princess of Moonbrooke squabble with Mariella, with the Queen getting a sly remark of her own in, and with her pride wounded Mariella orders her forces to defeat the Scions on her behalf. The monsters are soundly defeated and Mariella furiously wonders aloud how her forces could be conquered by human children, prompting the Queen to insult her foolishness for not seeing that they are the descendants of heroes. Mariella blanches at this revelation but the wounded Toadalitarian begs it's mistress to help it; Mariella snidely reminds the battered batracian that it was the one who insisted she stay within Belial's favour by following his orders. She tells it to seek help from him instead, killing the frog by casting Kacrackle and fleeing in the confusion.
The Queen thanks the children for their aid, though the Prince of Cannock laments that Mariella escaped. His little sister is over the moon and bursts into a fit of laughter, however, proudly pointing out that the four of them have seen that Hargon's forces are nothing but a treacherous horde that will turn on their own without a moment's notice while they have made staunch allies where ever they have travelled. The Queen asserts that she and the mermaids are among their allies as well, rewarding the Scions with the magic key dropped into the ocean by a descendant of the Warlock of Doorlocks. No monsters return to the sanctuary after this exchange and players are able to retrieve the powerful psyche swiper shield from the sandbed spa.
