Puff! is learned by Mages and Sages at level 37 if their wisdom exceeds 182 points. It costs 24 MP and deals 170~180 Fire damage to all enemies for 3~4 turns. Puff! gives the caster a strong resistance to Fire and Explosions and a weak resistance to Ice, [[Whack]], [[Blasto]], [[Deceleratle]], and being stunned. The stats are changed to 292 Attack, 358 Defence, and 167 agility; as before the attack stat is meaningless. In addition, it only lasts for a few turns, similar to its appearance in ''Dragon Quest X''.

The flames spewed by Puff! work on the [[metal slime family]] despite their immunity to all other forms of Fire damage as a homage to the tried and true method of level grinding from 1988.

The transformation takes effect immediately in this installment, immolating all foes with flames for 65~85 damage for 6~9 turns. The caster also gains an immunity to [[Sizz]]-family spells and fire breath while transformed, but will lose other natural resistances as well, such as the [[powie yowie]]'s Ice immunity. Stats will not change this time, though the claw slash damage is calculated differently. Instead of increasing the raw attack of the caster, the transformed state adds 60 points of damage after normal calculations, meaning that all metal slimes will be slain in one strike.

Damage output and statistical alterations are identical to {{VI}}. It can be learned by reaching rank 8 of the [[Monster Master|Monster Masher]] in the original and 6 in the 3DS remake, rank 4 of the {{Hero V}} class and at rank 6 of the [[Drake slime (vocation)|Drake slime]]. In the 3DS version, transformed characters will take on the appearance of a [[blue dragon]].

Puff! returns to the mainline series after a twenty-four year absence, being added to ''X'' with the version 7.0 update on March 21st, 2024. Instead of a spell that can be cast at any time, it is now the exclusive [[Pep|pep power]] of the [[Dragomancer]] vocation. Players who use Puff! are transformed into an immensely powerful [[great dragon]] for 60 seconds, with their stats going up by HP +650, MP +150, attack +810, defence +730, agility +510, deftness + 330, magical might +650, charm +100, and weight +650. In addition, the act of transforming removes all status ailments, increases the player's attack by 50% temporarily on top of the raw attack boost, and restores the player's HP & MP by 50% of the new maximum. The Dragomancer's regular attack option also becomes a twin strike like the [[falcon sword]], with the follow up blow dealing 70% of the damage of the initial strike. Unlike previous appearances, it only lasts for a few turns before the user is turned back to normal.
