The falcon sword of ruin is a bug-turned-feature of a weapon that originated in the NES and MSX 2 versions of Dragon Quest II. It is the accidental fusion of the falcon blade and the sword of ruin with all of the latter's incredible power and none of the draw backs, making it by far the greatest weapon in the game.

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line[edit]

Players can generate the sword by following these steps:

  • 1) Possess both the falcon blade and the sword of ruin before entering the Hall of Hargon
  • 2) Enter the Hall of Hargon while equipped with the falcon blade and do not use the eye of Rubiss to dispell the illusion
  • 3) Equip the sword of ruin; the character will be cursed, of course, but either exit without doing anything or now use the eye of Rubiss
  • 4) Do not level up while equipped with the freshly bugged weapon as it will reset the attack value back to that of the falcon blade

The condition of changing equipment during the special condition of Hargon's illusion leads to a stack overflow bug where the attack power of the currently equipped weapon is replaced with the newly equipped one. This can actually be done with just about any weapon, but the falcon blade and sword of ruin made for the most useful fusion and schoolyard rumors in the pre-internet era were focused on this combination.

Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake[edit]

The sword has become a properly-programmed weapon for the HD remaster, and is the most difficult to obtain by far. It can be stolen from liquid metal slimes by using the Princess of Cannock's Steal Sickle skill, but the filching rate is a measly 1/256. Note that it can only be stolen from the mercurial globs of goo, not dropped by them, and thus equipping the pirate king's pendant will not increase the odds of snagging the blade. The falcon sword of ruin is dropped by Malroth at an unknown rate and is thus subject to the free-bootin' accessory's effect, but the God's high HP of 7,500 makes this a time consuming task. Using the combo of applying Egg On and Oomph to the Prince of Midenhall while he is equipped with the regular falcon blade and using Cutting Edge while charged up with Wild Side will greatly expedite the deicide process.

Dragon Quest Builders 2[edit]

The falcon sword of ruin made its first official appearance as a proper weapon in this 2019 spin off approximately 32 years after it was discovered. It can obly be obtained by equipping the sword of ruin, checking one's appearance in a mirror, and then equipping the falcon blade while looking in the mirror. The English localization opted to use the über falcon blade name instead of inventing a distinct one for the occasion but that is a separate weapon altogether in the Japanese script, being written as hayabusa no ken kai (はやぶさの剣・改).

Trivia[edit]

  • The falcon sword of ruin is strongly associated with the Prince of Cannock due to the lad not having a signature weapon of his own in the normal version of Dragon Quest II while his cousins had the thunderbolt blade and lightning staff respectively. This association would persist in spin-off media, such as the Prince's cameo in Dragon Quest Monsters+ and eventually come full circle in Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake, where the weapon is exclusively equipped by the Prince.
