Great keepers are bonus dungeon monsters that have appeared in several Dragon Quest series remakes, before becoming regular enemies with the eleventh game. They are living statues made out of solid gold, but unlike the Gold golems they are not hindered by the frailty of the metal.

The Super Famicom port of the game marked the debut of this monster with them being encountered in Cloudsgate Citadel

As in III, the Great keeper wasn't present in the original release. They are encountered in the new bonus dungeon, the Altar of Wroth.
