Concerning bias[edit]
Though this page may appear biased, it is not. Proper examination of my points reveal that what I'm saying is true. Tharthan 20:22, October 3, 2010 (UTC)
- Despite what many of us might've been told by parents and/or teachers, appearances can be very important, so if you think others might see this as being 'biased', you might want to go to the lengths of diminishing that image some, even if it holds true to the original source (for example, saying 'humor' instead of 'pointless humor' since ANYTHING can be seen as pointless, especially when pertaining to videogames, of all things). The notion of fans being enraged at this seems alright, but giving examples is a touch unnecessary, especially since all given fans appear to come from the same source. As for this article having not existed, I can honestly say that I never knew that localization existed as a separate thing.
- As for things being distanced from the original text... I'm not entirely bothered by it, since stories get twisted one way or another over the course they're told. If anything, it seems funny to think what they, as localizers, must do when they realize what problems their changes will pose for themselves when things tie into one another, though, given the nature of the series, that isn't really something they need to worry about between separate titles. I'm probably looking at it the wrong way, mind. --PantheonSasuke 22:50, October 3, 2010 (UTC)
- I'm not concerned with the translation at all. I actually find the puns and references to be quite whimsical, and most of the time they make a lot of sense. Using British American accent's and a bunch of other accents makes the characters more lively, in my opinion. For example, not everybody in Dragon Quest IV in on the same country, so of course they will have different accents. Not everybody can speak perfect english. Now, if these guys were editing out parts of the storyline, important plot elements, and certain monsters and things (For example, the blood mummy) THAT would be a problem. Anyway, just my opinion. Restored this discussion for historical purposes. I agree with Tharthans recent removal of biased content, but this discussion is fine to stay here. --FlyingRagnar 15:09, 24 January 2012 (CST)
I'm curious what this page looked like before, because I just clicked the talk page now after thinking "Damn, this article is blatantly biased."
Fun examples of how NOT to write:
"A handful of older fans..."
Yeah, it's only a -handful- of them. Mere insignificant people that we can disregard. And only -older- fans! They're just out-of-touch, you know. Certainly you couldn't find multiple posts by younger fans who can't figure out what the heck Ragnar's entire continent is talking about. Humorously, it's actually the older fans who will go "Yeah yeah, rescue the children, got it", and the younger fans who go "Why am I looking for a barn!?"
"expressing their opinion that the use of puns and British English undermines the serious nature of the games."
Did there used to be another part after this? I imagine the original author also added "Oh, and I guess there are a few other well-discussed reasons too, but I'm too tired to bring those up. Let's just bring up this one thing, since it's the easiest to defend." Also... British English undermines a serious nature? Since when? Don't people use British English to make things sound MORE serious? What is the reasoning behind this logic? And for bonus points, can you explain how Dragon Quest managed to pull off using British English in a medieval fantasy setting for comical effect, when all other media has it create the exact opposite impression?
"Holders of this opinion are typically ignorant that..."
And this is pretty much why I clicked on the discussion page. I literally came to a dead stop while reading this initial sentence fragment. I went from "Heh, this sounds a little biased" to full stunned silence. How on earth can anyone start a sentence with this thought train and think they're being objective. No, my friend, people with complaints are not -ignorant- of anything. Nor are they -typically- or -mostly- ignorant, or any other weasel-words you can use to create an air of denouncement before you even describe the point. While myself, much like you, have never polled a large number of people about their perceptions of the game's atmosphere, I would imagine an overwhelming majority of hardcore fans of the series would be well aware of its lighthearted tone. And while I'm not sure what clinical mental illness you're suggesting that would make humans unable to notice widely smiling enemies, bright colorful worlds, and opportunities to puff puff, I can assure you that these people are not afflicted with it.
Anyway, for reference, here's an actual good example of how to write this section:
http://dragonquest.wikia.com/wiki/Plus_Alpha
And unfortunately I can't tell who copied who for that second paragraph, but either way, that's an excellent start and please keep it up.
Also, for future reference, if you're not sure if an article is biased, a good sign is when more space is used defending against something than actually describing what the critique is. And you're fully free to have your own opinions, but never, NEVER, fool yourself into thinking that people who think otherwise are "ignorant", or "they just don't get it." Actually try to understand people before immediately writing them off as idiots.
