In Dragon Quest IX, the Hero begins the game as a Minstrel (旅芸人, Tabigeinin). It has limited healing and offensive spells on top of the ability to wield Fans, Swords, Whips, and Shields. Their Coup-de-Grace is "Rough N' Tumble," which increases evasion and counterattack chances.
Description
Minstrels serve as a jack-of-all-trades class that can handle physical damage, spellcasting, healing, and distraction, allowing early players to test out various aspects of battle. However, Minstrels do not excel in any particular area, and might switch into more focused vocations, such as a Gladiator or Armamentalist, later on, depending on what the player wants. Despite this, Minstrels are still a respectable class, and can be kept as a multitasker in the party. Many of their features are from the Troubadour, Dancer, and Jester classes.
