The Demonsbane is a recurring weapon in the Dragon Quest series that appears as both a katana and a greatsword. Regardless of which design is use in a game, the sword deals more damage to members of the Demon family.
Localization history
The katana that appears in the 3DS port of Dragon Quest VIII has a different Japanese name than the two-handed sword that appears in X and XI, explaining the differences in its design between games. The katana's Japanese name is 退魔の太刀, which was localized first as Demonsbane due to the effect mirroring the Dragonsbane and Zombiesbane. For the localization of the eleventh game that weapon was dubbed the Banishing blade, and デーモンバスター became the demonsbane in English.
Appearances
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
The demonsbane has an attack bonus of +116, inflicts 1.3 times damage on Demons, and can only be equipped by Angelo. It is obtained from Cameron Obscura after completing the Boss Troll Stamp Card. The demonsbane has replaced the Shamshir of light as Angelo's most powerful sword unique to him.
