Hargon, mad cultist of Rendarak, is the primary antagonist in Dragon Quest II.
[[ | His cult, the aptly named Children of Hargon, seek to usher in an age of misery and destruction by summoning the god of destruction. To accomplish one stage of this mission, Hargon sent his minions to attack Moonbrooke Castle at the beginning of Dragon Quest II, killing the king and destroying the palace.
Although defeating him appears to be the final objective of the descendants of Erdrick from Midenhall, Cannock, and Moonbrooke, Hargon was in fact a corrupt cleric that planned to summon the God of Destruction, Malroth, whom the heroes must ultimately destroy after defeating Hargon.
[[Category:Dragon | Hargon has made regular appearances in the Monsters Series series and other spinoffs, as well as appearing as a central antagonist in Dragon Quest Builders 2.
[[Category: | |||
==Appearance and Personality==
Hargon is a blue-skinned humanoid being who wields a crystal ball-topped staff in his right hand that is much taller than himself. On his head he wears a finned cowl bearing a circular gem at the forehead, around his neck a necklace with a crystal pendant, and has a shroud draped over his body that prominently shows off a stylized bat. This bat is the emblem of his cult, and can be seen on monsters serving him such as the sorcerer, hargonaut, and wrecktor. He also wears sandals. When he first appeared, Hargon had four fingers on each hand, but later illustrations changed it to five fingers like many other humanoid monsters in the series.
Hargon is as arrogant and indignant as becoming of a villain. He is also a potent sorcerer, able to cast powerful magic and invoke terrible curses on those that would defy him. Hargon often has an affinity for explosive magic, particularly Kaboom as it was the most powerful spell in the series when he first appeared.
Hargon is knowledgeable of the threats around him, and destroyed the kingdom of Rendarak, turning it into his base of operations. He later sends his Champions―Atlas, Belial, Pazuzu & Mariella―to subdue various threats against him around the world, namely from Rubiss, and launches a surprise attack on the kingdom of Moonbrooke due not only to its proximity, but also the many powerful magic users who lived there, knowing that it was undefended since the fall of Rendarak. As a sorcerer, Hargon prefers delegating much of the brunt work and defence to particularly high-ranking minions, namely his Champions.
Hargon was given little dialogue or personality in the original versions of Dragon Quest II, but this would be radically altered in the HD-2D remakes of the Erdrick Trilogy:
start | |||
Hargon has been given a considerable amount of focus in the HD-2D era, where he becomes the central villain of the entire Erdrick saga. He began life in the world above as a High Priest and extremely devoted servant the Dragon Queen, who was overcome with immeasurable grief when she passed away after bequeathing the Sphere of Light to a young Hero. Inconsolable by her other attendants, Hargon fell into despair and was preyed upon by the faded spirit of a long-vanquished evil. The wicked one corrupted Hargon, turning his devotion to his late mistress into an all-consuming obsession. Now twisted into a vile mockery of his former self, Hargon's humanity dissolved and he became a monster that sought to end the world that took his beloved Dragon Queen from him. As Hargon was contaminated by the Great Darkness, so to would he infect the Dragon Queen's son, the Dragonlord, raising him from his hatching into a spiteful wretch.
Hargon would first attempt to bring about the end of the world and reshape by sending the Dragonlord into the underworld to retrieve the Sphere of Light while he remained in the ruins of the Dragon Queen's castle. Sometime after the Hero 1 slew the Dragonlord, Hargon descended into the realm with a new plan: summon forth a God capable of destroying the world and remake it to his own ends. Though steeped in utter madness, Hargon planned every detail to further his goal and accomplished each step with coldblooded efficiency. He disguised himself as a human and wandered the world for nearly a century, sowing seeds of evil in the hearts of innocents and forming the cult known as the Children of Hargon to spread further malevolency through the world by encouraging hedonism and degeneracy. Some of these humans, and indeed even members of his own cult, would be sacrificed so that Hargon could evoke and enslave the demons who would become his Champions. Each Champion would then be dispatched with their own tasks in order to spread evil among humans on a grander scale so that Hargon can cultivate that wickedness to summon Malroth, the Master of Destruction. Hargon's goal is to destroy the world and remake it anew into one of only himself and the Dragon Queen. To this end all other beings are but tools to be used at his disposal, from the humans he sacrifices to the demons he has enslaved.
The extent of Hargon's corruption is show by his contrasting attitudes towards the Dragonlord at different stages of his life. When he was first contaminated Hargon swore that he would raise the dragon into a worthy successor to the Queen, but by the time of Dragon Quest 1 HD he only saw him as a means to an end. Despite raising the Dragonlord from a hatchling to an adult and the wyrm being the living legacy of his beloved matron, Hargon bore no paternal affection for the him. This is seen in the finale of Dragon Quest 1 HD where he is shown lurking in the Dragon Queen's castle, merely lamenting that the Dragonlord has failed in his task and seeing his death as only an inconvenience. This ice-cold demeanor extends to all of his subordinates as well, even the fanatically loyal Mariella.
In the game's true ending Hargon's memories appear before the Scions of Erdrick as he dies, showing that he blamed himself for the Dragon Queen's death. This misplaced self-loathing quickly turned into bitter hatred for the spawn of Ortega, erroneously thinking that the Sphere of Light would have kept the Dragon Queen alive and that the Hero must have lied to her. His fellow priests attempt to calm him to no avail, only turning his attention to the Dragon Queen's egg. Here he succumbs to his grief and is preyed upon by the Dark One.

Hargon is established as the major villain at the start of the game, his minions attacking the kingdom of Moonbrooke and leaving only one soldier to struggle to Middenhall to deliver news of the attack before perishing from the hardships he endured. The Princess of Moonbrooke, one of the descendants of Erdrick, manages to survive the assault but is cursed by Hargon into the form of a dog.

Hargon is an antagonist and is encountered towards the end of the game. He is never actually directly fought by the player, however, and only appears in cutscenes.
startThe entire world that the Builder and Malroth explore is an illusion created by Hargon. Hargon is surprised it still exists after his death, but decides to use it to his advantage and attempt to revive Malroth once again. Using unclear methods, he draws Malroth and the Builder into the illusion; his intent is to use the illusory world as a sort of incubator with the Builder to restore Malroth's power.
Hargon's soul resides within Malroth, remaining from when he offered himself as a sacrifice in his original attempt to revive the Master of Destruction. It is due to his intertwining with Malroth's being that he is able to speak to Malroth in his head. Hargon patiently waits for Malroth's power to swell as the Builder continues creating things on the islands. Hargon does not reveal himself until Malroth's rapid power growth causes him to lose control of himself.
With Malroth's human guise incapacitated, Hargon spirits him away to coax him into shedding his human form that he has, in Hargon's opinion, grown too attached to. Hargon's methods here involve plunging Malroth into another illusion; in it Hargon offers Malroth's new friends, Lulu, Rosie, the other island residents, and the Builder, as sacrifices, which Malroth unwittingly accepts. Malroth, upon realizing what he has done, does not know how to cope with this and begins to resume his true form and suppress his memories from his time with the Builder. Hargon is pleased with these results and watches as Malroth destroys Malhalla from his castle. Despite the progressing destruction of the realm Hargon retreated to, the Builder is able to arrive at Hargon's castle and confront Hargon and Malroth. The builder defeats a stunted Malroth, which ends up working out in Hagon's favor; it allows Malroth's human memories to finally be shed, resulting two separate Malroths. One being the weak discarded shedding of his human memories and the other being the rest of him. Hargon and the Master of Destruction then leave the castle as it is destroyed, leaving the Builder and the vestige of the Master of Destruction for dead. The Master of Destruction and Hargon are both proven wrong, however, as they are chased down by the Builder and Malroth.
As Hargon mostly spectates the battle, he and the humanoid avatar of Malroth have a discussion between blows on why Hargon wishes to destroy everything. Hargon initially insists the absolute annihilation was always his goal, but Malroth reminds Hargon that he had originally wanted to make another world after destroying the first one. Malroth even comments on the high quality of the illusory world and wishes for good friends to come to Hargon "in (his) next life". Hargon appears to relent, slightly, and states he will "consider it" if the Master of Destruction is defeated. Hargon is subsequently dealt a fatal blow and finally fades away.end

Hargon becoming the chief antagonist of the entire Erdrick Trilogy was decided upon before development on Dragon Quest III HD began. A production team brainstorming meeting about additional story elements for Dragon Quest III HD lead to producer Masaaki Hayasaka considering implementing a Hargon-centric storyline between the three games, which was then proposed to Horii. Hargon (ハーゴン , Hāgon), mad cultist of Rendarak, is the primary antagonist in Dragon Quest II.
His cult, the aptly named Children of Hargon, seek to usher in an age of misery and destruction by summoning the god of destruction.
Hargon has made regular appearances in the Dragon Quest Monsters series and other spinoffs, as well as appearing as a central antagonist in Dragon Quest Builders 2.
Appearance and PersonalityEdit

Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary LineEdit
Hargon is established as the major villain at the start of the game, his minions attacking the kingdom of Moonbrooke and leaving only one soldier to struggle to Middenhall to deliver news of the attack before perishing from the hardships he endured. The Princess of Moonbrooke, one of the descendants of Erdrick, manages to survive the assault but is cursed by Hargon into the form of a dog.

- While not meant to be fought as a proper enemy in Builders 2, it is possible to strike him down as if he were via the spinning blade Flame Sword effect in battles where he is present in the background (where he is there as a background prop). He will eventually collapse as if defeated, but otherwise this is not noted by the story itself.
