Dragon Quest VI, was the sixth game in the Dragon Quest series of role-playing games published by Enix, and released for the SNES in 1995. Never released in North America due to the North American headquarters closing down. A remake is planned for the Nintendo DS.

Prologue

The prologue begins with the hero sleeping by a campfire. When he wakes up the woman who is with him asks if he slept well and then wonders where "he" has gone. A muscular man then comes onto the screen and says that after he looked around he knows this is the castle. The three then talk about how they've come this far for this and that they must destroy the demon king. After walking to the edge of a cliff the woman then plays a flute which summons a dragon that takes the party to a castle. After arriving in the castle the party ventures to the demon king's lair. Inside the lair the party can't see anything and the demon king Mudo appears. He lifts up your party with magic, turns them to stone, and then makes them explode. After the screen goes dark the hero screams and wakes up on the floor of his house and thinks of the dream as nothing more than a nightmare.

Gameplay

The gameplay of Dragon Quest VI is that of a classic turn based role playing game like its predecessors with new features and a graphical update. One addition is the addition of skills. Like spells, skills have various effects from attacking enemies to healing allies. Unlike spells, however, most skills require no MP to use making them useful to have. The biggest addition to Dragon Quest VI is the class system. Once you reach a certain point in the game you can assign your characters classes and have them learn new skills and spells. The classes are much like the ones from Dragon Warrior III except that they are not permanent and can be changed with no penalty to the player. Once you learn all the skills and spells from a class you keep them forever. Mastering multiple classes can unlock hybrid classes which are more powerful and have new spells and skills to learn.

Along with a graphical enhancement the game also featured animated monsters in battle. Also new to Dragon Quest VI was the addition of a bag which could hold an infinite number of items meaning you no longer had to worry about not being able to carry an item. The addition of a style contest provided the player with a unique way to earn some great items. Monster recruiting makes a return from Dragon Quest V and even monsters can take on classes. In addition to gambling there is a slime arena where you can take your recruited slimes to battle in different ranks and earn various prizes.
