Winding paths, pitfalls, and strong monsters wage a war of attrition on the party's resources and it is not uncommon for players to be forced to retreat on their first attempt through the cavern.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake
The Maw has been enlarged to a truly cavernous size but retains the same layout. The hallway of statues has been changed to a bridge over a chasm with titanic suits of armour crossing their swords, and there is a friendly mimic and troll waiting to be rescued from the dire abyss.
