Grinade

From Dragon Quest Wiki

The Grinade is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series. First appearing in Dragon Quest VII, it is a weaker, yellowish variant of the Rockbomb.

Characteristics[edit]

In terms of appearance, the grinade is identical to the rockbomb, but made up of yellowish-orange rock instead, with the same familiar red eyes and jagged smiles. They are generally the weakest of their rocky relations. These smiling yellow bold boulders must rely on physical attacks, since they have yet to develop the spark that allows them to explode or self-sacrifice like their brethren. They allow adventurers to let their guards down and then save up their strength to launch themselves at their foes, full force by using their Focus Strength skill. Sometimes they just simple spend a turn just staring, and others they find something funny enough to blindly fling themselves at the enemy, cackling madly.

These suspiciously sprightly stones merrily maul opponents, beaming all the while, and bring their boulder buddies into battle.

Although rough and ready in their younger years, the hard edges wear off with time, and most make well-rounded adults.

Dragon Quest X[edit]

Grinades appeared from the beginning of the game. Like before, they will cackle insanely and launch attacks and can waste their turns by grinning maliciously, as well as building up their power with Muster Strength. Starting with Version 1.4, it gained a rarefied version in the form of the Cursed rock.

Grinade appears as a C-rank monster of the Inorganic family as part of the Dragon Quest VII event. It can be recruited from the Tallest Tower in the Whole Wide World on the 1st, 6th, and 11th floors, eventually being recruitable from the second part of the storyline from Chapter 6, Episode 4: Into the Jungle. Trivia[edit]

  • The grinade's name is taken from grin, a type of smile, and grenade, an explosive used in warfare. This naming is presently a misnomer, as none of the Grinade's current appearances show it able to sacrifice itself in any way, unlike its relatives, save for its appearance in XI where it can use Self Destruct during the sidequest involving the Rainbow Mines.
