Helm Splitter

Helm Splitter is a recurring skill in the Dragon Quest series. It reduces the enemy's defence for 7~10 turns, with the exact amount varying between games.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten PastEdit

In the Nintendo 3DS version, Helm Splitter can be learned by advancing to rank 4 as a Gladiator or rank 2 as a Champion. It costs no MP to use and has a chance to reduce the enemy's Defence by 50%. Since it is an advanced skill, it can only be used by those vocations.

It can be used by the enemies Lieutenant kernel and Splitting headache.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed KingEdit

Yangus can use Helm Splitter as an axe technique learned after investing 6 skill points into the associated skill tree. It reduces a foe's defence by 50%, effectively casting Sap on them.

  • In the 3DS version, it reduces defence by 25%.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry SkiesEdit

This ability is learned with 35 skill points invested into Axe skill.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive AgeEdit

Hendrik will learn Helm Splitter through the Axes panel in his character builder. It costs 6 points to learn, 3 MP to use, and has a fixed of 50% to cut the target's defence in half. It also hits for 120% damage.

  • Later on, Hendrik can learn an enhanced version of the skill called Scrap Mettle for 16 points, which deals 150% damage, has a 75% chance to cut defence, and costs 9 MP to use.

Helm Splitter costs 4 MP and attempts to lower the target's defence by 20% for 2~5 turns. The success rate depends on the target's resistance to debilitation, and the skill is learned through the Bang Afficionado, Destroyer, Duelist, Fighter, Hulk, Martial Maven, Materialist, Multidisciplinarian, Outlaw, Paragon, Power Player, Überkilling Machine, and Wrecker talents.

Yangus learns Helm Splitter for 6 skill points, and it costs 5 MP.

Helm Splitter is known naturally by Bullfinch, Gripevine, and Pruslas at level 1 and can be learned by Hammerhood at level 16. It costs 12 MP to use, inflicts 130% potency physical damage to a single enemy, and can reduce their Defence for 3 turns.
