Discontinuum is a recurring skill in the Dragon Quest series. It is a Coup de Grâce associated with the Demon Swordsman, which completely slices an enemy and all surroundings in two with pure darkness.

Appearances

Dragon Quest Monster Battle Road

Discontinuum makes its debut in the second game as Psaro's special finisher when the Disruptive Wave or Secret of Evolution cards are scanned. Overflowing with power, the Master of Monsterkind charges at high speed, then performs a diagonal slash, cutting the area in half. There are two variations: one where Psaro leaps from the wagon and performs the attack, and the second where Psaro begins in his green demonic form and shifts back into his humanoid form.

Dragon Quest X

Discontinuum can be learned if a Demon Swordsman invests 140 skill points into their Wave skill, costing 12 MP to use. It inflicts darkness-attribute damage to all enemies around the user and reduces their darkness resistance by 50% for 40 seconds.

Dragon Quest Rivals

Discontinuum appeared as a super rare card exclusive for Demon Swordsman leaders. It cost 9 mana to use and would kill all units on the board.

Dragon Quest Tact

Discontinuum can be learned by Psaro at level 55 and costs 74 MP to use. It has a range of up to two squares away from him, inflicts 400% potency physical damage to a single enemy, and has a chance to lower their ATK for 3 turns. Upgrading the skill increases its damage and reduces the amount of MP it costs to use.

Etymology

Discontinuum's Japanese name Dark Matter is a reference to a hypothetical form of matter which is believed to account for approximately 85% of the matter in the universe. It does interact with the electromagnetic field, therefore making it difficult to detect. Dark matter was originally coined in 1933 by Swiss astronomer Fritz Zwicky.
