Wyrtoise

The wyrtoise (originally King Tortragon; TortoLord in the GBC translations) is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series. Introduced in Dragon Quest III, it is typically a stronger, orange-red variant of the wyrtle.

Wyrtoises are indigenous to the underworld. Not only can they call down lightning to smite the party, but they sometimes start the battle with Bounce in effect.

Etymology

  • The English name "Wyrntoise" is the combination of "wyrm" and "tortoise".
  • The Japanese name "ガメゴン Gamegon " is the combination of "かめ Kame "(turtle) and "ドラゴン Doragon "(Dragon). Then add the suffix "ロード roudo" (Lord) to separate from Wyrtle.
