The Hero of ''Dragon Quest VII'' is dressed in a green tunic, complete with a green hat that is the source of ridicule from Maribel. This hat covers his messy black hair. In some of the character art, he is depicted with a pet iguana.
[[Akira Toriyama]] designed the Hero of ''Dragon Quest VII'' before the game's scenario was finalized; he understood that Pilchard Bay was a fishing village and that Pollock was the foremost fisherman, but found the notion of the boy simply not caring much for the profession to be more interesting. In keeping with this he envisioned the Hero as a simple country boy who preferred playing in the mountains over the beach and loved small animals, drawing him with green clothing different from his father's sailing outfit and giving him a pet chameleon to reflect his kind-heartedness<ref>クローズアップ1: カメレオン

In keeping with tradition in the ''Dragon Quest'' series, the hero does not have the ability to speak in the game because he is the personification of the player. He only communicates through prompts of yes and no. However, he is generally liked by the people of Pilchard Bay and Estard. He is somewhat of a late sleeper, much to his mother's consternation. He also has a problem refusing people's requests and is constantly bullied into doing stuff by Maribel or his uncle [[Pike]].

主人公は、小動物好きの素朴な少年
 
今回の主人公は「ごくごく素朴な少年って感じで描いてください」という注文でしたので、多少あいきょうがあるように描きました。設定がそんなに決まっていないぶん、自分でいろいろと想像しながらかけたんで、とても楽しかったです！いわゆる典型的な勇者っているのは、これまでずっと描いてきてるんで、ちょっとあきちゃったんです。
 
で、ボクはこの主人公に関しては、田舎の子、というイメージで描きました。いろいろ資料を集めて、外国の地方の衣装なんかも参考にしました。かなりアレンジしてますけどね。主人公は「漁師の息子」という設定なんだけれど、ボクは「きっとこの子は漁には興味がなくて、いつも山で遊んでるんだろうな～」とか想像しながら描いてたんです！ [[V Jump]] March 2000 interview</ref>.
