The village is becoming increasingly isolated in the wake of the [[Dragonlord]]'s rising, with one young man lamenting that travel to other settlements is night impossible due to the hordes of monsters roaming the land. A merchant in the smithy explains that this is placing financial strain on the blackmsith as the prices of crucial metals is going through the roof, on top of an on-going familial strife.
The [[Royal Guard]] who fled from the [[Captain (Dragon Quest)|Captain]] and [[Gwaelin's Guard]] in the [[Quagmire Cave|swamp cavern to the south]] hails from Kol, and is the son of the blacksmith. His father is furious with him for opting to become a Tantegel guard instead of following in his footsteps as a smith, and has now fled from that career only to lock himself in his home out of shame. The Royal Guard remains inconsolable even to his wife and daughter.
Beyond these hardships the village enjoys a good reputation thanks to its soothing atmosphere and hot spring, with travellers willing to risk the journey despite the odds. The skill of Kol's blacksmith is well known even as far as [[Tantegel]], with one woman boasting that the smithy has housed generations of skilled metalworkers―little do the people of Kol realize that the family that works their famous forge is descended from the [[Jipangese swordsmith]] of old. The family has kept the legendary [[forging hammer]] in tact through the generations and locked away in the village well is the [[orochi sword]], presumably given to the swordsmith by [[Erdrick]] as evidence that the she-serpent that terrorized his homeland had been put to death.
Kol's status as a popular tourist destination prior to the events of the game is reflected by the several travelling NPCs taking shelter in the village, most of which are surprisingly knowledgeable. One man has heard of [[Princess Gwaelin]] being dragged off to the southern cave while a Tantegel guard is quick to inform the player that the [[Golem]] of [[Cantlin]] dreads the sonorous tones of the faerie flute, and one young man even alludes to the existence of the [[ultimate key]].
Kol remains an optional destination for much of the game, but the player will be required to visit after the events of Cantlin and the tragedy on the [[Weeping Isle]]. This is when the bastard [[Spiketail]] attempts to raze the village much as it had done to [[Damdara]], leading a force to slaughter the villagers. When the Hero arrives a cutscene will play showing the Royal Guard's family cornered by a [[dark skeleton]] and [[dragonfly]] that are about to strike, but are ambushed by the Royal Guard weilding the forging hammer. The tender moment is interrupted by Spiketail itself when it slices the  Royal Guard's back in a fly-by, but is in turn confronted by the Hero and drops the stolen ultimate key as it is slain.

The man is plagued with self-doubt due to harsh circumstances and will hand it over to the group when speaking to them by the item shop.
The Jipangese blacksmith lineage is alive and well in the modern era, and the latest generation will be proud to reforge the [[faded blade]] into [[Erdrick's sword]] once he is given a sample of [[orichalcum]] to work with. The invaluable ingot can be obtained from the [[Craggy Cave]] after a lengthy sidequest that involves speaking to the researcher in [[Cantlin]], then the prisoner in the 2nd floor church jail of [[Tantegel]], then finding the hidden area in the Craggy Cave.
