Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince[edit]

Between the perpetual lava flow and the chunks of ignius rock raining down, this Circle is the most hazardous one Psaro and [[Rose will venture to. Nevertheless, taking out the big hitters of all three echelons is necessary for his plans, and in fact all three are even brothers.

Seasonal changes[edit]

  • Spring: certain craters will now contain vortexes that launch Psaro to distant areas
  • Summer: certain boulders will collapse when approached, revealing hidden items
  • Autumn: geysers will form in certain areas, raising Psaro to new areas
  • Winter: rivers and lakes will freeze over despite the volcanic activity, allowing Psaro to cross

Lower echelon[edit]

The giant monster for the echelon is a green dragon, lurking in the narrow gap between rock formations on the western side of of the map.

The only village in the entire Circle is here, the little settlement of Dragglenook. The community has had a panoply of problems lately though, from a thief stealing several possessions to Gnorbert being separated from his young son Gnibbler by a sudden burst of lava from side of mountain. He pleads with Psaro to save his boy and promises to give him his precious green rock as payment, but alas the thief has filched even that. The prince agrees to lend a hand regardless of this, and Gnorbert explains that the local big hitter, Bernie, is hell-bent on opening the Infernal Gate. Gnorbert is certain that this was the cause of the new lava river and therefor Bernie is bound to still be near the gate in the deep recesses of the Caverns of Conflagration.

When exploring the literal hellhole, Psaro and Rose witness a human dealing with a gang of monsters with a contraption of his. The young man reveals himself to be Toilen Trubble and explains that he is a magical researcher who came to Nadiria to pilfer treasure, with Psaro immediately taking umbrage with the thief's capricious attitude. A confrontation nearly takes place with Toilen shows off the green rock he swiped from Gnorbert, but he defuses the situation and heads deeper into the cavern. At the lowest level Psaro and Rose confront Bernie, with the elf asking for him to shut the Infernal Gate due to all the trouble it's caused. The dragon is having none of it, alluding to it being vital to his brothers' plan, and attacks on the spot.

Later, back at Gnorbert's hovel, father and son are happily reunited before Toilen enters the scene and flaunts the green rock he stole from the rat. It was indeed a piece of travelite, which he hands over to Psaro. Gnorbert chews him out, but states it was going to be given to Psaro anyways and what's important is that his son is safe. With that burglary wrapped up, Toilen forces himself into the group on the grounds that Psaro's monster team would be the best bodyguards he could hope for on his treasure foraging.

Middle echelon[edit]

A missing lynx is the echelon giant monster and it's prowling on a narrow pleateau close to the entrance of the Zealot's Chamber.

The middle echelon is accessed after the purple travelite is given to Psaro by Percival. The party is immediately confronted by a flamethrower named Fuego upon exiting Rosehill Tower, who demands their names and accuses them of being underlings of the big hitter, Ash. When Psaro states his intent is to bump off Ash and spread his reputation Fuego states their goals are aligned: Ash has been gathering local monsters to sacrifice them in a profane ritual in the core of the mountain known as the Sepulchre of Flame.

Deep in the lava hollow, Fuego explains that Ash intends to sacrifice the kidnapped monsters in a temple which was submerged in magma until very recently. Accessing this temple was why Bernie opened the Infernal Gate in the lower echelon, as it is where the Ifreann Eagle's soul rests. Once revived, the bird becomes an immortal phoenix who would bring disaster to Nadiria under the control of Ash and his brothers.

The dragon is confronted just as he's about to perform the sacrifice, but Fuego's assault proves ineffective and the monsters are used to create a new body for the eagle. Ash slips away after he is defeated, and in gratitude Fuego joins Psaro's ranks.

Upper echelon[edit]

The giant monster is a stout troll near the small island suspended over the lava with two bridges at the southern-most point on the map.

Upon arriving the party is warned by a desperate tantamount to flee the area as quick as they can, warning the group that Blaise is performing a ritual to fully rejuvenate the Ifreann Eagle to it's former glory. The echelon is totally devoid of any settlements, with the only structure being the temple at the top of the mountain known as the Dragonspate where all three brothers pray to the slumbering eagle. Here Blaise explains his family's plan is to simply power up the eagle and offer it to Randolfo the Tyrant as a weapon. All three brothers are fought at once, who resort to beseeching aid from the awakened Ifreann Eagle once they are defeated. The bird will have none of their wimpering, however, declaring that underworld inhabitants are not worthy of it and roasts the trio on the spot before turning it's attention to Psaro.

Once the self-aggrandizing condor is defeated, the brothers are revived along with the monsters sacrificed to create the eagle's body. Blaise, recognizing the error of his family's ways and as well as Psaro's strength, forces the trio to swear loyalty to the prince and join his ranks.
