In addition to skills learned through vocations, the Hero of Dragon Quest IX learns two special plot abilities:
Egg On
Taught by Patty after speaking with her in the Quester's Rest. This ability increases the tension of an ally by one level.
Note that despite teaching the hero this skill, Patty cannot actually use it if she joins the party.
Zoom
Unlike in previous Dragon Quest games, Zoom is only available to the Hero after first returning to the Observatory and arriving at Newid Isle. Since it costs nothing to casts, chimaera wings are only needed if the hero is incapacitated.
